67 MINI Crazy Eng Conversion $7500 NOW $5500 w/out mags Wed, 05 January 2005 13:30 Go to next message
67 Mini, with toyota starlet turbo engine and 5 spd manual.
Mods include:

4E-FTE
5Spd Manual
Blow Off Valve
Electric Water Pump
3 Core radaiator with thermo fan (located in boot)
Brand New 12" mags and tyres
hi/lo boost controller (6psi + 9psi)
starlet instrument cluster
car is licensed but not engineered
6 months rego
partly retrimmed interior
Needs body and paint work (currently has very dodgy paintjob)
2" straight through xzaust
Nolathane bushes
Custom chain setup on front suspension to reduce body lift and torque steer.
Also includes a set of 4 fibreglass flares

Car is currently being driven on the street every now and then becoz it is so much fun (people seem so suprised to get "BOVVED" by a mini) Shocked but would rather not risk it much longer, 1 day i'l end up "BOVVING" a cop. Potentially very fast although traction is a problem. Will pull on most cars in 2nd and 3rd but off the line isnt easy.
same model mini's with less crazy conversions have sold for over 15K but were painted and finished. For those who dont know, this is actually a real morris mini, not the later leyland type. Would need aprox 1.5k-2k spent to pass pits, which would include a disc brake upgrade and a fully adjustable suspension setup.
This is the only one of its kind in W.A.

Chasing around $8500 NOW $5500 with standard wheels may consider swap for road or road/trail motorbike with cash difference.

BOOTHEMAN- i used starlet mounts and welded in custom frames to hang them on. I bought a full front cut yes, but i wouldnt say i used all of it, eg, i didnt use the aircon Razz

Icarus mate ride your ZZR over here and we can do a deal Cool im sure i could factor shippin into the cost of the car e.g. maybe go halves in shipping. think bout it!!!!

Enflamed actually mate yes those holes in the firewall are legal, they are original holes which originally had cover plates on them, i just removed them Smile so no worries about that.

Styler ohh come on mate, no one is gunna take that sticker seriously when its on a cute little innocent looking mini hehe, even the cops prolly laugh at it, just as long as i dont light up the treads in 1st 2nd and 3rd in front of the pol leec i think it'll be fine Razz

come on u guys u know u want to all buy this mini and have the pleasure of chopping commodores Twisted Evil the look on there faces are priceless, but for a limited time only u can actually buy that look for around 8.5k Shocked

Cheers
Matty

That is so neat! Love the retro conversion deal but wonder at paying this much for a car that is not engineered. Can this lil beastie be engineered or is forever to be a outlaw sleeper?

Re: 67 MINI with Crazy Eng Conversion Sat, 08 January 2005 00:55 Go to previous messageGo to next message
bunkyT18 yeah mate it could be engineered with a bit more work, its needs a disc brake conversion done on the front, which is a drive in drive out deal for $1100, it also would need a suspension conversion which is a bolt out bolt in deal with total cost for all parts being $700 this makes it height adjustable all roound Smile and it needs a new panel on the rear $60 plus a few little bits here and there i spose aswell. As i said in the 1st post these model minis with less extreme conversions have recently sold for 15k plus so with a few more dollars spent it would be well worth it. Unfortunantly i dont have the spare cash or the patience to do it all and have other priorites now. BTW price is negotiable.

Cheers

I don't like the way the engine thar seems a little... off square, I spose... what's the deal there?

I used to drive Mini's exclusively (had 3 since I was 16) and considering a properly worked 1300 mini motor can pull 140 MPH on the fwy and demolish 255 Clubsports (Yeh, I did say worked) this thing would dominate. I've seen a suzuki GTi turbo conversion in a Clubman that could pull 12's on slicks (13s on street trim) and I'd dare say this would have more oomph.

I'm a Mini nut with three in my collection:
- van
- moke
- traveller (woody wagon)

A guy on another forum I frequent built a Mini Clubman with the same engine as this one. It pulled a 13.9 in street trim with standard boost. Very Happy

I have to say he did a better job than this one too. Am I the only one that thinks this conversion looks really rough!?! It seemed as though I was the only one who noticed the engine is not square.

Did you speak to an engineer before you built it?

Bnicho well being the mini nut that you say you are, you will already know that a mini clubman has a bigger engine bay than my mini, so yeah it would have a been a touch easier to get it into a clubman therefore look a bit neater and not have to sit the engine on the piss a bit like i had to. If youd like to cum round and show me a better way off doing it, then by all means do so. But i do believe that this is the only mini of this shape ie. not a square nosed clubman, that has a starlet turbo engine and box in it. Also to my disadvantage is that i do not have the later type suspension ie. the rubber donuts and shocks as opposed to the hydrolastic. If YOU have done a nice conversion please post up some pics for us to see.

IronWanker the starlet may have a bit more oomph but i must admit it is very difficult to get power to the ground, especially with the old hydrolastic suspension setup, as i mentioned in an earlier post it really needs the sus uprgrade, which would make a dramatic difference.

I appreciate the problems you faced getting the engine in there and I'm not trying to piss on your car. I especially like the subtle way you spaced out the grille to give the Turbo enough clearance. My only concern with the angle of the engine is what the engineer would think of it?

Yes, I am well aware that the clubby has a few inches more space, hence the reason they are often used from conversions of this type. The other option commonly used in the UK is to stretch the front panels on a roundnose. A lot of work!

I have not done a conversion on a Mini myself, but have done quite a bit of research into the options. I'm probably going with a Suzuki GTi engine, as it fits into a roundnose without too much hassle. But of course - less power than the Starlet GT donk.

The Starlet engine weighs just 1kg more than a 1275 so the hydro should be fine anyway. If it's sitting a bit low it probably just needs a pump up - around $50 from any reputable Mini specialist.

Posted a link to this thread in the FOR SALE section of http://www.ausmini.com a few days ago in case anyone there is interested in your car. You are more than welcome to visit and see the other conversion various members have done or are doing.

Good luck with the sale.

Cheers.

Bnicho i apreciate your positive comments and also posting the sale on another site. The problem with the sus is not necesaraly the weight of the engine, it the torque it puts out, and with the hydrolastic how the front and balance because they are joined, when you give it stick the front launches up into the air and the back squats all the way to the bumps, leaving me looking into space as the front end has about 6 inches between the wheel and the guard at full lift, i have in fact welded in brackets to only allow the front to lift to a certain point, which is where the driveshafts become perfectly horizontal, to try and keep some weight up front. although in fact it now tries to lift the passenger side wheel off the ground and chirp constantly under full power.

Cheers

Yeah, I can see how that would be a problem! Shocked

It is possible to blank off the hydro lines and make it four seperate bags. Then you wont have that problem so bad and it stiffens up the ride a bit too.

Otherwise a "dry" conversion is pretty easy. Change rear subframe complete and fit dry cones and top arms to your existing front subframe.

BTW: It is quite easy to fit Honda City/Civic (non vented) or Accord (vented 9.2") disks to Mini drum brake hubs. I've just finished converting a set of City units for my Moke and it is much cheaper than fitting late Mini disks. Although with this much grunt the smaller drum CV's probably would not last long.

Cheers.

Eww Hydrolastic

You NEED rubber cone.

Find a clubman shell man, I've had 3 MINIs all rubber cone, fantastic. My GF has a NOMAD (Aus. 1300) with hydrolastic and it wallows like a mofo.

Granted though, you achieved something by getting that engine into that bay. And the Morris does look better IMO.

does she pull to one side with the engine like that though?

Yeah definantly need the rubber suspension, there is no doubt about that. No it doesnt pull at all because of the engine being on the piss a little bit. The only time it pulls is forwards and HARD Razz

a friend of mine converted the suspension in his 66 cooper s replica to konis all round and im pretty sure it wasnt much over $1000.Ill have to ask him. His disk brake conversion cost around $1500 in Adelaide but that was a fair while ago. Hes currently getting guard work done so he can fit 13x175 superlites under the car. My friend would also be interested in any conversion information you have! He currently runs a 1380cc engine with carb, extractors, zorst etc no big performance mods. ( apart from the bore )

cheers André

Matty! My Mini for sale!!! Sad

This car rocks - its absolutely crazy - and a credit to Matty for getting the shoehorn out and cramming the starlet engine in.

This would be a fun car for anyone to finish off.. all the hard work is done! Just needs to be tidied up (Paint job etc)

Dood - I wish you weren't selling so early after finishing it - if I didn't already have 3 cars to keep on the road, I'd consider the purchase!! Rolling Eyes

Wanna swap for my 1G Sigma wagon? (*note, 1G conversion yet to be done! Razz ) haha
