yeah, i know, u's all saw the title: Celica ST and thought straight away, NOT!
well, hear me out here:
The car is a Celica ST ST162, 1988, and its RED! yay! (red's my fav colour )
228000kms, new tyres, has one surface scratch on the back left (no body damage), just been serviced, regular services, no accidents, no rust , no strange noises, and they're fine with having a NRMA/mechanic inspection
of course, this ^^ is all the seller's word on the phone, ive yet to actually see and drive the car
also has 12 months rego, power steering, air con and CD player
how does that sound for $4000
edit: i can probably get them down to $3500
also, could you guys let me know some common probs that occur with these Celicas? I already have a fair bit of info, just need some advice from people who would have a good idea about this car
btw, it will be my first car, i got my p's about a month and a half ago, and have been driving my mum's 99 Subaru Forester it sucks teh massif dong
So, is it hot or not? That is the question

I wouldn't pay that, being an ST you are going to want more, power, the 3sfe isn't enough. I'd be willing to bet u could get a nice SX model for 4k anyway.

well, its only my first car, and i havent been in many other cars other than my mum's forester, also my dad wont approve of me having a 'powerful' car . just how much more powerful is the 3sge than the 3sfe, anyway?
also, i dont have much chance of finding another st162 here in coffs, let alone an sx for 4k
my budget is hardly going to accomodate an economical st after maintenance/petrol/insurance etc costs, let alone a cheap sx

I just brought an SX for $2500 with CD, amp, sub and 16'' rims and new lowered springs and shocks all round. An ST is sort of a 2 door camry but if it is clean than get it.

See if the power aerial works. They are expensive replacements (if you get a real toyota one).

I thought it was SX... so i want to change mine to not...
Unless your dead set on the coupe... theres just no use having an ST... the SX just has so much more to offer

If you can't get an SX, get a twin cam Corolla instead (same 86-89 range).
ST's are definitely not hot. They only have front wheel disks and the 3SFE is really dreary.

I accidently voted Hot because i thought it was SX...
SX only comes in hatch...
ST comes in Hatch, coupe and convertible (Japan only)

what about a 1985 rolla, cause that's another option. that would be the ae82 with 4age, yeah? unless its a 4ac
anyway, that ^^ rolla has recond motor, aircon, CD, "good cond", but rego only till feb, for $2700 ono (read < $2500 )

hahaha everyone is already recommending the sx. i too will put forward a vote for the sx. i've owned 2 (one as my first car) and they are great first cars. not too much power for a first car yet still heaps of fun.

Watch out for rust in the A-pillar along the edge of the windscreen, on the sunroof and under the doors, leaking rocker cover and distributor gaskets, power-steering pumps ALWAYS leak on these cars so only worry if its extreme. Other than that just look out for the typical things like odd engine noises, cv's etc.
If you dont plan on doing much 'spirited' driving then go for the ST. The motor in the ST hates to rev hard (due to different head design - redline at 5k compared to 6.5k on the SX) and the brakes are pretty average too. I doubt there's much difference in fuel consumption between the ST and SX but I suppose it comes down to the way you drive it. As said before, the ST is really a 2 door Camry... but the chicks cant tell the difference!

i vote no... for the ST.... it shouldnt cost more than 2500 given its in 'showroom condition' .... the ST is slower, less power... just get SX Dude... with the 3SGE, you will not be mistaken!!... For 4K-4.5K u dcan get
Celica SX 1988+ model
Sunroof
Cruize control
good body
Good / immaculate interior
for a really good one, you prolly need to look at the 5-6.5K area ... but only for the SX's after 1988 too... Get yaself a whitelightning like mine

white lightenings are pretty hard to find and people usually want top dollar for them, however the interior, well mainly the front seats are worth it as they great. definately some of the more comfortable buket type seats i've sat in
