my opinion
dont bother with either
save your money for a conversion or spend it on the suspension
u wont get much bang for buck out of either system
to put it in perspective $500 is 1/3 of the price of a 4A-GE, GZE, 1G-GTE, 1JZ-GTE engine package.

Hey,
Yeah i spose but im a grandma driver on my l plates so cornering or better suspension probably isnt going to be a issue, as for a engine transplant i wasnt thinking that far but i spose a 4AGE isnt that much only a grand or so. I'll have a think about it, thanks rob,

Option 3. Spend all your money on engine mods.. Cams, head work, stroking. S'all good.
I'll agree though, exhaust is probably last on my list, mainly because I hate that tiny note from the K series (stock).

Hey all,
Considering i'm only 16 and only have a general idea of mechanics and my old man is kinda stingy its hard for me to do those kinda things eg cam, head etc.
Could i take the car to a performance place and ask them to "tune" it up a bit? Or would that be a expensive idea?
Any help would be much appriecated,
Kind Regards,
Brad

If you just go to a decent place and ask some Q's, you'll be suprised how much it'll cost. Labour is the big killer, they'll always charge you shitloads for labour.. Which is why it's always best to do it yourself!
First thing you should do is go and buy a manual for it. Read through it, learn how it all comes apart and how it all goes back together. It isn't all that hard to replace a head in a K series.. So that can be an easy first step. Remove the head, get some work done to it, put it back together. Cam's and bottom end work get a bit more difficult, have to be careful with timing, locations, etc.
Or, as you said, you can just pay someone else to do it. Just be sure to ask around, get prices from different places, ask about recommendations in here, blah, blah, blah..

option number two sounds alright but as rob_RA40 has said "u won't get much bang for buck". option 2 may incress power slightly and give a slightly better fuel economy. Exhaust mods can help but are not as good as what some people think. If you are expecting alot of power from an exhaust, your going the wrong way. Engine modifications are the way too go to make the car quicker.
I'm not telling you what to do or anything. thats just my personal opinion. but If you wan't it too have a bit of a note (don't like the sound of 4 cyls with exhaust myself) option 2 would be a good way to do it.

Bradelz wrote on Fri, 21 January 2005 09:24 | Hey all,
I went into my local exhaust centre and i got quoted 2 sports exhausts.
No.1 - Is just a straight nice 2" pipe with a muffler, with the original header pipes, would cost around $200 maybe more for a resonater $220.
No.2 Was with extractors a nice 2" and a muffler would cost around $550.
I have around $700 to play with.
What do you all reconmend i have enough money to do the 2nd option.
Thanks
Brad

I wouldn't bother with extractors. the corolla came standard with an extractor style manifold. So there's a savings there which you can spend on some head work and maybe a cam.
As a side note a Datsun L20B carb will fit. But it might be better to hunt up a weber from an Escort or Cortina you'd just have to get an adapter plate made up.
