Hi,

Aussie food includes, as mentioned, the meat pie and sauce, and also the pavolva and the vanilla slice.

The word "dickhead" was invented by Australians in the early 20th century. I think we also use the word "dunny". And a "bastard" can be a mongrel (another oft-spoken word in Oz) or your best mate - depending how it's used.

I think we also made "bugger" a popular word, and other sayings such as "stone the crows", "don't come the raw prawn", "flat out like a lizard drinking" and "dry as a dingoes donga".

I knew a guy that used talk in rhyming slang. His favourite saying, down at the pub was, "put ya brass bands in ya skyrockets and pull out ya bugs bunny and have a wally grout, you dropkick & punt!"

Don't forget the lovely way the TRUE AUSTRALIAN talks:

"Ey gazza, look at that guy there with the shorts up his cooda"

Meaning:

"Hey Gavin, take a look over there at that gentleman with the really tight shorts on, doesn't he look ridiculous?"

Or the great Aussie pick up line:

"EY Shazza, you ever tripped over a tree stump? Well how bout a root?"

Cheers Adam

Yeh unfortunately you have probably only been exposed to AFL which is really just embarrassing..As for understanding it though its not too hard, big bunch of lanky uncoordinated guys scrapping for a ball where anything pretty much goes, they run toward the post and try and kick it in between but score anyway if they miss the main goals...Check out rugby league, harder to understand but a much better game..Its good to hear that you have learned some new things and have had a good time..good luck and I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay!

Translation 1:

"Pardon me colleague, but I thought it might be mutually satisfying if you were to use a portion of your earnings to purchase myself and other acquaintances a glass of ale or other refreshing beverage, you undesireable."

Translation 2:

"Get your wallet out and buy us a beer, ya tight-arse cunt."

Yeah "No worries" and "Mate" are the two big ones. My brother once went for a walk and passed a construction worker doing something. On the way back he noticed something interesting about a sign the workers had put out, so he turned to the contruction worker and asked him why it was like that (I can't remember what it was). Anyway, the guys said "Oooh mate... Yeah mate, I dunno mate." My bro said "Okay, thanks bye" and the guy sais "No worries mate, bye."

LOL.

Only in australia we get this. I was strolling through the city.
There is an intersection with various roadworks and construction getting done.

One corner had 3 guys. They were building a disabled ramp from bricks or pavers. Whatever you would like to call them. 1 guy is of course laying the brick. 2nd guy is having a smoke. 3rd guy is watching/supervising the laying of the brick!

Across the road. There is a mini crane of some sort picking up a 8 meter sheet of glass to be laid as an entry door of a new cafe. There is 1 guy operating the crane. 2 guys positioning the glass. 1 guy redirecting pedestrians. And about 10 other guys watching on while one poor bastard has to line up the holes n bolt the door/glass in.

FOOTY: A bunch of mature men running around a field chasing a oddly shaped ball in short shorts. N doing homophobic style tackles and being too overly physical. Like i mean for a contact sport u expect more clashes. U "mark" and some guy comes up n holds onto your shirt for a few seconds. N then he lets go? And u kick again? WTF!!!!

Finally. I'd like to bring forward the guy that does the "Holden" Australian month ad. How overemphasised is his accent? Does ANYONE know someone that talks like so? I just find the commercial very irritating. Who else would second this?

I'm gonna probbaly get my ass flamed for this. For my truely unaussie ways. I'm sorry if i took a shit at anyone here. Its clearly unintentional.

Yep, damn annoying. He's a bit of a "dropkick and punt" if you ask me. Funny thing is that if you listen to the add you'll notice that the Holden-month is January - however, it stops, according to Holden on the 26th!!!!

I particularly hate those American adds that come over here and they don't change the people or the accent or anything else - such as the Pringles add.

i reckon the crocodile dude steve irwin has stronger accent!! suprisingly i havent seen him once at all on australian TV.
i used to have a friend back home who is not aussie who could do a perfect voice impersonation if your proud outback crocodile dude

and how could i forget to mention that in melbourne u turn right from the left lane Shocked Shocked

The holden guy has a hiss or slurr. Its really annoying. Each time i hear it. My head throbs in pain. Mad

Isn't it Dave Hughes? i.e. Aussie comedian? Sounds like a real ocker-gay-man but he's not.

I hate Dave Hughes so much. His voice annoys the crap out of me, and his stage personality shits me up the wall. Oh and he isn't funny. Stupid breakfast radio.

His sense of humour is sooo dry it's funny
he can say something funny without trying to make it sound funny.

Steve irwin rocks ! Any guy who can capitalise the way he has on an impression americans have of us must be commended - rake those dollars in steve - your works going toward a good cause ( animal saving + preservation ) plus it gives us a bloody good laugh at the same time * thumbs up!"

A steve translation!

" Crikey! look at this little fella! Hes EXTREMELY poisonous , and mak strike at any time so i better not stir him up! Lets go in for a closer look shall we ?"

" HOLY SHIT! A SNAKE! i wonder if i can get it to try and bite me so my ratings in the US go up and make my latest series a winning money raking success! "

Go Steve GO!

No... I can't see anything wrong with a man loving his fellow crocodiles....

What is the deal with Fosters? I have rarely seen it available (not that I look), but I would've thought VB would be the kicker, not Fosters.

Hi,

Another saying is "horses hoof".

I'll let Pizza Hut translate that for you. He did such a nice job on the last one.
