Drive line set ups 4 ae86 Sat, 29 January 2005 10:42 Go to next message
Hey guys just a few questions about driveline setups in AE86s it seems that the drivelines are weak as piss. I have blown my diff and 2 gear boxs since owning my car (6months) I have put in a T series diff with a 2 way lsd and a 4.11 ratio(2 weeks ago) i replaced the T50 box with another T50 and just yesterday second gear went.. I am using the stock sprinter tail shaft this rattled a little bit on idle or over bumps. Iam supposed to be using half the t18 and half the sprinter tail shaft but was just using the sprinter 1 till i could get it fully balanced and rebuilt. So i guess my questions are would my stronger diff put pressure on the gear box? Or the tail shaft being a lttle dodgy? Or will the T50 box never handle 250hp and 17psi?? What driveline set ups are you guys using out there. It gives me the serious sh%ts that things keep braking nearly making me want to sell up...

Man you should not be using the sprinter shaft. Thats just plain dodgy.

The T50 will never handle that power if you drive it hard like it should be driven.

Get onto Steve-ae86 on these forums and get in on the group buy for the 4A*** to W5* bellhousing. That way you wont be busting the box.

The t18 diff can handle power and abuse as seen in Simon-AE86 drift spinter.

Do it.

A sprinter tailshaft will do fine, as will a T50. I know several people who have completed SEVERAL racing (rally) seasons with a T50, you just have to keep it in very good repair. The T series rear end will do exactly the same if it has been setup in the proper way, with no backlash on the diff gearing.

Use good oil and a properly setup diff/box and you will be fine.

Is the group bye in the driveline section?

What do you mean by setting it up properly??

Is the w58 a supra/celica box? do i just need a bellhousing to fit this? and use my t18 tail shaft?

HEy!

I'm in the middle of a 4agte into sprinter conversion. I'm using a w57 going to ms112 toyota crown rear diff.

My engines not in yet, so I'm not talking from experience, but I'm sure this will be strong as the crown axles/diff is quite a bit bigger/heavier.. Also you get 5stud + discs + internal drum handbrake. And lsds are pretty easy to get as it's F series.

Quite sure this setup will take anything I throw at it.

What i mean is making good friends with the people at your local bursons and buying LARGE quantities of a GOOD diff/gearbox oil like Castrol Syntrax, or Redline. And then change it every 10,000km or even 5000km. Most rally/race guys change it every race/rally.

Setting up a gearbox/diff is important, keeping backlash and loose play to a minimum. Ensuring that the gears are kept free of bits of metal and other junk. Also flatshifting, bogging it down and many other nasty things will shorten the lifespan.

i disagree. i find its usually the SAVAGE left foot that will destroy a gearbox / diff, no matter how strong they are.
you can have shitloads of power, and torque and still keep a lowly gearbox alive, while going fast. it just requires being smooth on the clutch during take off and gear-changes.
dumping the clutch, and flatchanging are not benificial to driveline health.

i want a strong diff to but i don't want the huge weight of a hilux diff. Are the t18 diffs as heavy or lighter?

It depends a lot on your driving style as said above. A T50 and S-series can survive behind a powerful engine if you treat them nice (although your power may even be pushing that). But it sounds like you don't so you'll need to upgrade or replace very regularly.

The T18 rear end is slightly heavier than an S (as measured by my inbuilt arm-scales as I loaded them into the car) and in my opinion really isn't any stronger. The crown wheel is a little bigger, but the axles have the same spline (which is the thinnest point of axle), the only real advantage is the availability of an LSD.

another example of people replying with no idea what they are talking about?? I think so!

now just so were all clear...

A T18 or for those of you who would prefer a chasis code TE72 has a T50 gearbox and a T series Diff and a shaft almost identical to a sprinter excepting spline numbers, so tell me just how a T50 is

not as good as

?

granted T50's have some syncro issues however for thier size and weight they are a fairly robust box. t series diffs are fine for thier intended purpose in a N/A setup, they were never designed to take the torque load of a turbo. Piss weak? I dont think so, mismatched to application? absolutley by too many people wo get all upset and then claim they are weak.. oh please Rolling Eyes take a look at the whole car package before you critisise a particular componenet

if you just doubled you engine power of course the driveline will most likely be unable to cope!

yes there are stronger boxes and diffs that will be more than adequate, remeber theres always a trade off... in the case of hilux diffs and W5X gearboxes it will be weight, and therefore power to weight ratio

end rant Razz

you can't go from 50kw to 150kw without expect troubles if ur using stock tailshafts and gearboxes...

i think u miss understood what i meant... i wasn't trying to get into a discussion cause i don't know much beyond the use of a 4agze-t18-w50 combo... but... that setup is working excellent for a lot of ppl... by no means am i an expert just going on what i've seen around the world...

Again so many people speaking from where the sun really doesnt shine. A T18 diff is a T-series, and is only .7" larger than a S series. (6" vs 6.7"). They are somewhat more robust for the centre/ring gear than an S series but similar strength on the axles.

The tailshafts used in the Sprinter are actually quite similar to the ones used in many other performance cars, including the Soarer and Supra. Same design rules apply. They are fine.

T50s are a good box and if you arnt slapping them into gears (not the fastest way to shift) or flat shifting (again not the fastest way) they will survive for a very long time with good oil. Similarly the T series diff with good oil and proper treatment and setup will last a long time.

Diffs should be set up with no back lash, and reasonably tightly shimmed. If you have no idea what im talking about then take your diff to a specialist.

absolutely amen to that...

anyone can break any box by flatchanging often enough... i used to do that, and i used to break a box every 6 months... i changed and my last box has been in for 3 years (just came out to make way for a 5 speed after a "little" clutch explosion Wink )

if you are already breaking diffs and boxes, you obviously don't drive very well or responsibly.

either learn to drive Wink, or beef up the drivetrain beyond recognition, and add lots of weight to your sik car.. Wink

I do KNOW that if the diff. was set up by a diff. specialist that it would be set up with the correct amount of backlash. I wonder why you would say that "diffs. should be set up with no backlash." I am rather intrigued. Hope nobody follows this advice.
Cheers

IRA11Y: thanks for the comment man very true.
