Hi all,

Just advanced the timing on the 7AFE, and I'm wondering what exactly does pinging sound like?? It was making a quiet rattling noise somewhere in the engine bay under mild acceleration sometimes, until I retarded the timing a bit (still advanced a few degrees from stock) and gave it some 98 RON. Was that rattling noise pinging? And if it is do you think I did any major damage? I drove it about 10 km's with a bit of that noise.

Cheers!

it's probably just the TVIS system working. is it only present between about 3500-4500rpm?

Sounds like when you shake a blown light globe, only louder.

we have a winner - gianttomato..sounds just like that i think!

froodogs, i wish it had tvis but it don't! the whole reason i had to advance the timing was gutlessness before 4000rpm!

thanks guys..i always thought pinging would be really loud...luckily a friend suspected that it was actually pinging, not just a friendly rattle Shocked

pinging is a bitch... AFAIK... it only happens a low revs??? dad was telling me (mechaninc at toyota dealership) that there is a knock sensor that detects pinging and should retard the timing.. he said to test this sensor they just get a hammer and "tap" the side of the engine Razz.. good old hammer.. always good for fixing things...Razz

Not true... it can happen at any time.
Amazing how much you can learn about timing by remapping a weight/vaccumm based distributor.

Next is my DIY programmable electronic ignition.
