W56, are they as strong as W58

Done the search thing with no luck, so I have to ask.
I am trying to find out if the W56 gearbox is a strong as a W58. Have been told they are and that the W56 is the one to use beind my 1JZ-GTE into a MX83 Cressida as the gear stick positioning will be right. Apparently the W56 was behind the 1GG twin turbo ??
Whats your thoughts.
Cheers, Kevin

Yes, they are the same box, with a different sandwich plate and different ratios.
I'm 99% sure the position you want is the MA70/GA70 Supra position.
It doesn't matter what box you get, you can swap the shifter position.

I'm pretty sure the W56 was used in commercial vehicles, so the ratios will suck unless you're using it in a Hilux or something.

Quick replies boys, thanks. I will have to make some more inquiries tomorrow. If the ratio's are for a small truck, forget it. I want it to go like a rocket, and the ratios will be wrong. Thanks again, Kevin

It would appear most of the "W" type boxes were designated "G" in 4WD's. Like the 4wd version of the W52 with different gear ratios was a G52 in hiluxs, and the w58 turns into the G58 with 3.93 1st gear. The difference to this rule is the said W56 and W59 which have 3.93 first gear without the "G" specification.

Those ratios would be good if you have, say, a 3.5 diff.
A W55 with a 3.73 gives the same ratio at the wheels as a W58 with a 4.1 (within 5%)

As a quote from an old TV show once said (you are all probably to young to know it) "You've all done very well".
Thanks heaps, Kevin
Eviljack - thanks for the link.
P.S. Does anybody know the name of the show ?

Spoke with Dellow Automotive earlier today and they tell me there is no such thing as a W56. And the gear stick positioning has nothing to do with the W58 number or whatever number it may be. This is what I am told.
Thanks for your input, Kevin

I already told you about the shfter position.
And yes, there is a W56, but its a commercial box.
There are W55/W56/W57/W58 and W59.
W56 and W59 are commercial boxes, with treestump pulling 1st and 2nd gears.

I wouldn't listen to anything Dellow Automotive say.
