3K Starter Motor

Hey,
Before you go off at me for not using the search function - i tried it and found nothing - i also tried using google where i found a interesting site but you have to pay money to ask a question.
So i was wondering my starter motor in my 3K every so ofter when you try turning the car over it will just turn the starter motor and not the engine, it takes 3 goes before it cranks the engine, so i'am going to take it out and take it too a auto elect.
Anyways, i've heard you have to take the exhaust manifold off? Is there any other way to do it? Like squeezing it from underneath?
Thanks guys,
Brad

Depending on the car and exhaust it can be a very tight fit to get out. From memeory you unbolt it and slide it forward to wards the engine mount, then drop the snout of it down and pull it out. Can be fiddly to do.

it could be bad contacts to the solenoid, if not...
it seems the starter is ok, its the solenoid that
doesnt engage and pull the gear onto the flywheel,
from what you have described. i think you can get
replacement solenoids.
as for getting it off...
<runs off to look at car>, hmmm looks like a dog
to get out, it *might* be able to get it out once
the two bolts are undone from underneath if you are
lucky, remembering to disconnect battery before lol.

If you have a standard exhaust, it'll come out with a bit of fiddling. With most aftermarket extractors it'll come out, too. Sadly, my extractors have to come out to change mine.

Got the same problem in mine!
I find it's only hard to start if left for a while... Same symptons though.
And, it is possible to remove it, as the rest have said. Done it before and I'll have to do it again.

If it was bad contacts or the solenoid not throwing out the starter would not be motoring. In fact it would just make one click and that would be it.
It is more than likely going to be the clutch in the starter has failed or the fork arm has broken. Either way the starter has to be removed and disassembled to be repaired.

Hey,
Thanks for the help guys,
gr8r-x: with mine it will start you dont have to wait, like when you turn it and it doesnt engage you do it again after it has stopped spinning and it will always kick.
BradW: thats what i was thinking, take the whole thing out and take it too a auto elect.
Thanks again,
Brad

it's the bendix/starter drive/starter drive clutch/starter one way drive - different names, all the same thing.
it will get worse, probably gradually, but maybe stop completly.
it's only the drive, but it's usually easier & cheaper for most people to replace the entire thing.
