I've been playing Auto Modellista for the PS2 the last few days. I've had it for a while, but never got around to playing it - while it looked cool, average reviews put me off. Suprisingly, I'm really enjoying it. The style is unique and the game has a great sense of speed. American's seem to complain that the game is too drift heavy, but their version is different to the PAL one (which is closer to the Japanese).

The game isn't perfect. Opponent AI, in particular, sucks. It's also not very long. You can finish the whole game in less than 8 hours.

After finishing it, I found out about the secret mode which is unlocked. It lets lets you swap engines between the cars, something Gran Turismo never let you do.

3SGTE into an AE86. RB26DETT into a 350Z...

The game has the Lexus RS200 (210hp 3SGE) and I'm looking forward to swapping the Beams engine into the SW20 and taking it for a spin Smiley =

The game has a really good approach to tuning, which wasn't really mentioned in the reviews. Licenced parts with lots of tuneable aspects.

Unlike Gran Turismo where you have to buy everything, in Auto Modellista it's more about the choices you make, rather than how much money you have Smiley = With uphill, down hill, wet, circuit and street tracks, the game has a good amount of variety and is fairly challenging.

A big part of the game is working on your cars in the workshop, designing and customising your cars aesthetics. You can make your own stickers, choose body kits, put on racing stripes, paint the car and all sorts of rice (bonet scoops on an MR2 anyone?).

Here are a bunch of random shots from Capcom's site. I picked up the game for $15 and at that price, you can't go wrong!

I think the non-existant drifting and handbraking in the PAL/NTSC-J version was reversed in the USA version. Also, I think they made hitting the walls more forgiving, and added a load of USA cars.

I may pick up a USA copy of the game for the Gamecube at some stage, just to see for myself.

The most fun conversion is putting the 2JZ into the Toyota s800. It does donuts without needing to use the analogue stick.

Also I think the RX-8 is the fastest car...I put a 13BREW in it instead of renesis and I think it would have easily gotten over 320/330km/h mark...faster than the tuned R34 GTR anyway.
