Edwin's sold 3SGTE ST162, now 1994 SW20 Turbo! Fri, 11 February 2005 14:55 Go to next message
Well... about time I took the time for a Members Rides post. Some of you may know my car already, some may not. Anyway, I bought my first car, a really beat-up ST162, on April 29th 2000. It cost next to nothing, and at least the engine was running strong, so the project begun. In the following months, me and a guy who is a mechanic, started fixing her up.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel1/nr1.jpg
How I bought it

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel1/nr6.jpg
Left frontside damage, and both side sills trashed

We quickly decided to ditch the brown interior, and get a complete grey/blue one instead.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel2/nr6.jpg
After cleaning

After we got all the parts to fix her up, the chassis had to be bent back into its original form.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel3/nr3.jpg

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel3/nr4.jpg
Panels fitting again

After some welding, both side sills were OK again, and the car was sort of complete again.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel6/nr3.jpg
I think there's about 5 different cars in there!

After the 3S-GE engine received an overhaul, we painted the engine bay, sills, etc. ourselves. I decided on Nissan BS7, a pearl blue-metallic paint.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel11/nr6.jpg

After that, the tedious work of finishing the exterior began. The dad of the mechanic guy worked at a panel beater, which was quite handy.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel12/nr2.jpg

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel13/nr3.jpg

One thing is for sure, I'll never do that again! I was really, really bad at it. Always sanded too much filler off, sanded through primer, etc.! Oh well, you can't be good at anything right?

As soon as the body was done, it was bodykit fitting time. We came across a quite rare wide fender set with sideskirts, originally made for the ST162. A German company used to produce this kit, but they have long been out of business unfortunately!

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel15/nr2.jpg
Rear fender flare

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel15/nr4.jpg
Front fender flare

Then, one day, it was all primered and ready to paint! Mind you, this was almost one year later...

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel21/5.jpg

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel21/6.jpg

After the paintjob was done, the buildup started. The car was reassembled quite fast, and started to actually look like a car.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel25/nr1.jpg

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel25/nr3.jpg

And then, I made the mistake of a lifetime! I bought a 2nd gen 3S-GTE engine out of a US-spec MR2. Looking back, it was a bad engine, but I knew nothing about engines then and totally trusted the mechanic guy, who said nothing about the crank not even turning when he first tried!! (BAD PISTON RINGS, ANYONE!?)

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel26/1.jpg
Sure, it LOOKS nice

Meanwhile, the buildup progressed slowly, because we had to wait for new Toyota parts, such as US-spec front corner lights, rear clusters, etc. But it started to look really good!

To get it road-worthy again, we had to drive it so a test center for a checkup. This is when the 3S-GE engine went bad on us! There was a knocking sound, which indicated faulty main bearings, and I was just about to give up on this project!

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel32/nr2.jpg
At the test center

So, we decided to make the 3S-GTE swap a rush job and just put it in there. I trusted the guy, who said everything was going to be OK.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel34/nr2.jpg
3S-GE out...

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel34/nr6.jpg
3S-GTE in...

He used soft hoses to connect the Supra MK3 frontmount he had lying around, which was a low-budget but temporary solution.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel35/nr1.jpg

I myself did some welding (first time for everything eh?) to get the stock exhaust to fit the 3S-GTE downpipe. Again a temporary solution.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel35/nr3.jpg

Meanwhile I found some 16" tires for the wheels I bought along with the car, so I could finally ditch the 14". Looked much better.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel38/nr7.jpg

After a few weeks, I noticed the engine used a rediculous amount of oil. About 1 litre on 400km. The mechanic guy blaimed the turbo, so we took it off and sent it for a rebuild, which was very expensive, and solved nothing.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel44/nr1.jpg

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel45/nr3.jpg
Good as new, but that wasn't the problem

In the meantime, I sourced some pipes which I had welded into a custom frontmount intercooler hardpipe system. By that time I had already installed a secondhand alu intercooler.

Well, at least she drove again, but the oil problem remained. We put some brake fluid on top of each piston in hope that would cure the piston ring problem.

Because it seemed better after that, I upgraded some parts, such as the suspension (yellow Koni shocks and lowering springs) and the exhaust.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel52/nr7.jpg
Custom 2.5" exhaust with dual tips

During a random junkyard search, I found an abandonned Gen3 3S-GTE just lying around! I took it home, because I knew the oil problem would cost more to solve.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel57/nr1.jpg

In the meantime I put on some really corny neon lighting. Don't blame me, I was still young then!

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel59/nr10.jpg

Did *some* car audio as well, not a big fan of expensive setups, so I kept it simple.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel60/nr3.jpg

Then I ordered coilovers from Ground-Control, which I figured would be a good upgrade to replace the old lowering springs.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel62/nr1.jpg

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel66/nr4.jpg

Because my oil problem went from bad to worse, I decided to stop driving the ST162 until I had all the parts for the Gen3 motor (which missed the injectors, ECU, wiring, etc). Me and three friends hired a large barn to be able to do long-term projects.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel64/nr1.jpg

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel64/nr2.jpg

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel64/nr4.jpg

I quickly decided to get the Apexi PowerFC instead of sourcing an OEM Gen3 ECU.

I wanted the Gen3 engine to become a show-worthy one, so I started polishing everything made out of aluminium.

Did the MR2 gearbox conversion from RWD to FWD using an ST185 shifter mechanism.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/deel67/nr4.jpg

By this time, I started thinking. I really wanted a 300hp car, and I had been crazy about SW20s for as long as I can remember. In spite of all the hard work, sweat and tears, I really couldn't resist the thought of a 300hp MR2. So I bought a donor car, and put back the stock 3S-GE. I then sold everything from the map sensor to the wiring loom to the new turbo, the polished intercooler, etc. and saved up until I had enough cash to buy my dream car. Am looking for a good one right now!

The car is for sale now, hopefully it'll go to someone who will appreciate all the hard work that went into it. It'll be sad to see it drive off, but I need the cash and the space. These are some nice pictures I took for the ads:

That's about it. If you want to review the complete project, it's right there on http://www.tccn.nl/st162. It's in Dutch though, but there's many pictures to look at.

Cheers,
James

Dutch = what people speak in The Netherlands

Doesn't matter, just had a little free time on my hands and thought it would be cool to let you guys know what happened, those translator sites are really difficult to make sense of (I make use of them a lot to try and translate Japanese sites)...

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

I don't know, never dyno'd it, but the 3S-GE is bone stock. The 3S-GTE was a US-spec one, which had 200hp stock. I added a frontmount intercooler with hard pipes, replaced the air filter with a K&N, and did the 2.5" exhaust install. So I guess that'd get it to around 220hp or so...

Still I'm very glad I sold it! Coming weekend I'm going to check out an MR2 already! It's a JDM 1994 Turbo (revision3), Super White II, hardtop, only 55.000km on it, immaculate condition! RacingHart lightweight 1-piece racing alloys, big exhaust, HKS filter, Blitz TurboTimer... It's very likely I'll buy it!

I sold the 3S-GTE in parts. Made back some money to help finance the SW20! Will definately post pictures if I buy it!!

I really looked forward to this game, but as you said, bad reviews held me off. Must almost be budget, this title, I think I'll have a go myself! Looks brilliantly fresh, doesn't it?!

I can give you this pic though!

http://www.tccn.nl/02-leden/101%20tot%20en%20met%20200/155/155_ra40.jpg

It's my 1978 RA40 which I've owned since age 19 or so. It's not drivable at this moment, it's been parked for about 2 years now. I really want to keep it though, because it belonged to my brother, who died in a car crash about 5 years ago. So there's sentiment involved, which makes it really hard to decide wether or not to keep and restore it, or to get rid of it.

p.s. Sorry about the 'macho' pose, I was still young then Laughing

*Ahem* 3S-GTE in this case Smile But you're right, especially in the engine area there's a lot of overlap between the two cars.

One of the reasons for buying an SW20 in the first place, actually! I worked with 3S-GTEs a lot now, so they start to feel very familiar.

If I hadn't decided on the MR2, I'd probably end up buying a Nissan S14A...

I bought it! This weekend I went to the UK and got my '94 MR2 Turbo! Here's an impression of last weekend.

We (my girlfriend, me, and two friends) left very early on Friday, February 18th.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-011.jpg

Had to drive 520 miles to see it... and cross a sea, too!

On Saturday 19th we arrived in Newtown, Wales around noon after spending the night in a guest house (very amusing). Finally I was able to see the car for myself!

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-001.jpg

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-002.jpg

The ad said 'immaculate inside and out', but the exterior was'nt perfect. There were some deep scratches on the right front fender, and some other paint defects. But once I got to test driving it, those imperfections all vanished. What a ride! Very fast car indeed, no noises from dashboard, suspension etc whatsever! Braking was good, steering even better! What a fun car to drive! So I bought it, and took it back home.

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-003.jpg

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-004.jpg

Of course, the UK it a RHD country, and all I ever did was drive LHD cars, so it took some getting used to, but overall it wasn't a problem!

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-006.jpg

Back in Dover, the ferry was delayed for two hours, which sucked as we were all exhausted already. Well, at least we were able to watch Shrek2 (again...) on my friends DVD player (in the VW Passat parked right behind the MR2).

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-007.jpg

Once the boat arrived, I was first in line to get on it! The German tourists next to us stared at my big Jap exhaust in disbelieve Laughing

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-008.jpg

Arrived home at 6:00 in the morning, and after a good night's sleep, it was time to wash the car as we ran into heavy snow on the way home. Had to quickly get rid of all that nasty salt...

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-009.jpg

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-010.jpg

So there it is, my new MR2 Turbo! Some specs:

- Super White II
- Hardtop
- Climate Control
- ABS
- Power steering

- 15" RacingHart CP-035 rims / Yokohama tyres
- Clear front indicators
- Front and rear strut tower bar
- HKS replacement filter
- Blitz TurboTimer
- SR Jasma approved exhaust

Holland is a LHD country, but you are allowed to drive a RHD car here, no problem. So... no, I won't convert it.

Thanks for the compliments mate!

Just posting some new pics of the (trip to) the registration examination. It passed, too! Within two weeks I should have my license plates and then finally be able to actually drive it! Wohooo!

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-012.jpg
After hours of waxing and cleaning inside my heated garage, I still had to drive it though the nasty salt Confused

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-013.jpg
Looks familiar to you guys? Well, for me, right-hand driving still doesn't feel completely natural. I find reverse driving especially hard!!

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-014.jpg
Well, at least it's still clean. Waiting for permission to enter the examination center!

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-015.jpg
Finally!

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-016.jpg
The first time I had a chance to check out the bottom of the car. Not bad, not bad indeed! No rust at all!

http://www.tccn.nl/st162/sw20/sw20-017.jpg
Apart from some salt picked up on the way, this looks very satisfying! Block is very clean, no oil leakage whatsoever. I'm happy! Laughing

Your ST165 buildup is nothing short of amazing, the finished product, is awesome! That's really cheap though, especially with a Gen 3 3S in there!

The SW20 is dead sexy, sooooo jealous!

Thanks mate! I sold the ST162 with the standard 3S-GE engine back in though, otherwise it would be VERY cheap indeed!

Yours looks good as well, SW20s are sexy PERIOD. Cool

Put it on the dyno last Saturday! No mods to the engine except for HKS replacement filter and HKS Hi-Power exhaust.

Results:
Max 241 rwhp (180 kW)
Max 302 Nm rwtq (222 lbs/ft)

Not bad for a stock engine!! These values should have been stock at the flywheel, not at the wheels Laughing
