jzz30 r154 conversion under way DIFF QUESTION ADDED Wed, 23 February 2005 09:15 Go to next message
Hey all,

So I took the plunge and have an r154 complete with soarer bellhousing and all the other goodies needed to turn my droning auto into a screaming manual on its way to me. BUT no cross member or tailshaft. Will the auto cross member be suitable or can it be modified to suite the new box?

Also what can be done about the tail shaft, the yoke has been supplied but the current shaft is too short from what I've read. Any ideas on what can be used as a replacement or how much a custom jobbie would run?

And finally a clutch. The one I'm being supplied with is from the 1/2 cut and I'm guessing would have done 120 000kms as that is the half cuts kms. So I don't want to slap that one in to have it slip like a fat woman in high heels on a wet wooden floor a couple of months down the track. Any suggestions on selection for about 230-270 rwkw applications? I dont want a button clutch, the box is too rare for that sort of daily punishment

Thanks in advance.

tail shaft isnt a major drama if ur supplied with the yoke, u can take it to a tailshaft specialist and they can lenghten it if need be put on the yoke and balance it, cant see it being any more then 200-300 bucks

if u want 270rwkw ur going to need a pretty tough clutch, get a twin plate (2kish)if u can afford it, or cheap way would be a cermic 9 puck exeddy (under 1k) i beleive someone is seilling a hks twin plate on the forums right now for a ok price.

Auto crossmember fits, just change the gearbox mounts over.
Auto tailshaft needs to be lengthened by 50mm. Not every tailshaft place will do it because they are originally friction welded. So just ring around. Should cost $220.

Clutch, for that power level .. Jim Berry from race Clutch in Stones Corner Brisbane. about 1K. carbotic 5 puck, pedal feel is reasonably light, pressure plate is upgraded to 3400lbs. Beware the clutch will be a bit on/off like.
You will need to replace your master and slave with new ones before to long , the pressure takes its toll. Slave is the same as the Ma70 $109 trade and the master will cost $140.

1 final question, is there a difference in the diff ratio from auto to manual? Will this work to give me a better acceleration with lower top speed or the opposite?

My speedo stayed the same (accuracy) when I converted from manual to auto, so I guess that they are probably the same in the Soarer.
