Camshafts for modded 4AGZE (not turbo!) Thu, 24 February 2005 03:26 Go to next message

Hello,
I am trying to figure out which camshafts would best suit my app.
A highly modified ZE with :-

-custom 65mm plumbing,
-4AGE inlet manifold, extractors,
-Subaru water to air IC,
-and SC-14 at 13psi

I am pretty sure that breathing is going to be the limiting factor.
What sort of camshafts given I don't want to destroy low end torque would work well on the street? Is lift or duration more important? i.e. 256 degrees, 9mm or 272, 7.9mm ?

Regards, Nick

Are you running this with the stock ECU ? shim or hydrulic buckets ? Or with adjustable cam gears ?

Cams Specs :

Intake cam
Duration : 267
Duration : @050 220
Valve clr: 0.009
Valve lift: 0.308
Cam lift tdc: 044
Phase: 110

Exhaust cam
All specs same apart from 039 Cam lift tdc
Intake Timing Adv open 24 close 63 ,at 050 0.5 open 39 close
Exhaust Timing Adv open 64 close 23 ,at 050 40.5 open .1 close
267 = 8mm lift

Ow i still have this sitting in my garage for two years now Mad with a shim adjustable buckets and gze head .

Hi,
What is a shim adjustable buckets head? Is that a shim under bucket setup?
Cheers, Nick

You can get shim over bucket, shim under bucket and shimless buckets.
I assume he is talking about shim under bucket.

for a cheep solution to the shim under bucket conversion

Valve Lifter Inner-Shim Conversion

For the 16V 4A-GE (1985-1991)

BY TAKA8 of www.86Life.com

One of the biggest setbacks to making a high rpm 4A-GE 16 valve is the fact that the 16 Valve 4A-GE's valve lifter's design being that of the outer-shim design. Many kits have been available for making the conversion for inner-shim design (shim-under bucket) have been available but for great expense. One of the visitor at Club4AG's linked site in Japan, www.86life.com, have come up with a new and simple way of converting the lifters in the 16V 4A-GE.

As much as we all hate the clumsy design of the Vitz and the sister cars the Platz, the Yaris, and the FunCargo, the 1SZ-FE 1.0 liter 4 cylinder engines use a lifter system that's compatible. And guess what? It's inner shim design. What's more, the shims are available in pretty exacting selection in the .02mm increments from 5.12 ~ 5.68. It's also approximately 20 grams lighter than those shims in the 4A-GE 16V so I'd say it's an ideal upgrade for a rebuilt 4A-GE aiming at high rpms. I would say it's highly recommended for rebuilders of the 16V's.

As you can see from there photos, the 1SZ-FE's single piece lifter at left is the inner-shim design made of better and lighter materials while the 2 part, outer-shim buckets of the 4A-GE seems archaic by design. Actually the buckets are of the one-piece design and there's no shims at all! It's done by the micro-protrusions that act as shims...

Actually the buckets themselves look like the one's on the 20V's but without the shims...hummm...

Even if you got the lifters all mixed up, it's labeled in the back so you can assemble them with ease...

one piece buckets Thu, 24 February 2005 08:33 Go to previous messageGo to next message

Has anyone in Australia done this conversion? Is it as simple as (potentially) buy one bucket, use it to check all clearances, then order 16 more?

A couple of people have looked into it, but they are not particularly cheap to source from toyota. I recall somewhere around $28 each Shocked Which is still cheaper than a toda etc kit I spose.

Yes you can do that - but it'll be a pain for time bolting in and unbolting the cam shafts 16 different times Smile

you dont neccesarily have to pull it out every time Andrew, all you need is the current shim tolerance and one base measurement to work it out accross the rest. If you buy the smallest shim and take a base measurement compared to the old shimover in the same location its easy to get the correct shim size by simple calculation.

Good catch, I was popping back in to say that's what one guy did over here in the states.

Get all the measurements, order one (the smallest) shim/bucket and purchase the rest off of measurement/calculation

I just ordered one of the smallest lifter from a Toyota dealer here in Perth. $25 + GST...sweet, got it in Sydney too.
