amy old car, and then drop a newer more powerful engine in it.

Take a look at the cars in the member's rides section as no doubt there would be quite a few in there.

ofcorse rotor is the best but to get them to 700 hp+ you need to spendm atleast 30 grand on there engine.. well 13b anyway. 20b is a almost the same and 26b (quad rotor) probibly bit more due to the rarity of the engine.. but if i did have 50 - 60 thou to spend on a car a rotor would be my choice Razz

When it comes to drag racing, it's hard to go past the old V8 clunkers for cheap thrills. Buy a shit-tin Cortina for next to nothing, slap a big cast-iron pushrod V8 in it (351's are cheap), buy all the off-the-shelf go-fast bits you want (it's depressing how much stuff is readily available for these things) and you'll be running 12's, 11's, 10's, whatever you can afford.

Of course it won't be as sik as a VTEC Honda yo.

I'd also think an old school carby fed v8, or even a "newer" school fuel injected v8 like the VN V8 would be the go. I know a group of guys with VN/VP's and most of them now run in the 12's with not too much work on the engine. Hell, most of them are still running the stock throttle body.

Can't go past an old Kingswood/Falcon with the 5lt or 5.8lt for cheap fun though - I had some very frightening rides in cars that cost less than $5k AUD and were pretty brutal in a straight line. I doubt any modern turbo jap 4 or 6 cyl would be as quick for that sort of money.

Best value for money I've seen in a drag car was an LJ torana GTR with a 350 Chev motor, 2 spd powerglide and tubbed 9inch rear. Cost second hand but freshly built (never run at the track) was $15K - first time out it ran 10.07!

I'd say the CRX idea is the go but very much doubt you could get a decent one for $2500NZ. Do the math and add on the cost of engine recon and turbo upgrade blah blah and you would be looking at 14000 to 16000 NZ$ once you were finished. Admittedly this would produce a scary fast 13 sec car that would demolish much more expensive rides. I'm wondering if the dude that started this post has been a little influenced by Hi Octane's "Overboost" dvd where a similar buildup was featured. The 14000 to 16000 budget was what they ended up with.

Bang for bucks, ET Pulsar, Mitsubishi Cordia, or BPturbo converted 323. I would not look past 2TGEU converted old school rollaz and Datto/Nissan engine conversions. But for absolute budget performance The ET and Cordia are the go.

In reality, even those cars will be lucky to pull 16's unless you spend $. There really is no "cheap" performance car.

Hey Mookie, the 'converted 323' is done by using a Mazda turboBG front cut or engine package. The 323 and Ford Laser are almost identical. These are both pretty easy to do the motor conversion to as they are basically all the same car. BG motors and front cuts are pretty affordable too, at least compared to a lot of other ones (EG SR20DE- DET Laughing )

Oh yeh, and the cheapest possible zippy car is of course the 'feared' 3TC equipped T18. Buy a crow cam $300, a set of Extractors $250 and fit twin Webers or Mikunis $200- $400...

Look out! Sideways action aplenty. You can surprise a lot of punters with this. Fit high compression pistons and rings and they go even better. Your average T18 goes for between $400 to $800 with well loved examples setting you back $1500 max.

For sure there's plenty of better engines around, but what cars do they come in? SR20DET's generally come in smallish, lightweight cars - which more than makes up for any deficit in the engine department. I know that every other kid on the block has a tweaked Silvia, but there's a reason for that!! - They're (relatively) cheap to buy, and respond quite well to a handful of mods.

I s'pose none of that would matter much if you're dead-set determined to get a rotary power-fix, or a V-Tec screamer. - Just do whatever you want to do, rotor_life. Very Happy

Motors can be had for less $ if you look around...
If you do a conversion yourself and the swap is bolt out bolt in it's not too expensive. It was just a suggestion. If the car don't cost you nothing then why not? If we were all into it for just having a fast car and not modding them these forums would have far less posts and be called 'New Toyota Car Buyers Club for The Spoilt Rich Bitches'. Laughing

If ya want a cheap lead tipped arrow, they go for a datto 120Y with a C18 in it. You could put one of these puppies together for about 3grand including brakes and engineering. Should be good for 12's easy.

Or you could get someones pre loved 1G celica and run 13.7 in it. Evil or Very Mad

go for a cheap small "light car" stick the most powerfullest motor(that is cheap) that will fit in it. and it will fly.

some cars to consider playing about with

70's Celicas
70's Corollas
TX-TD Gemini
Datsun 120Y
Rotor powered Mazdas
HB Torana
LC,LJ Torana
Cortina
etc

These are the cars I'd be playing with if I wanted to do this
