icon5.gif  1.3L 4K-C Easy Mods? Tue, 16 July 2002 10:27 Go to next message
Guys,

Does anyone know any good mods for a 1.3L 4K-C engine, without going over the top?
Any easy tweaks?

Thanks in advance,
George

Replace it with a 5K? Or even better, a 2T or 3T!

Seriously, if you've only got 1.3 litres to play with there's only so much you can do... even a 10% increase in power will lift you from "pathetically slow" to "slightly less pathetically slow".

The standard 4K gets the fuel mixed in the pots well at low rpm. It has good torque down low and is economical, very drivable. This is because it has a small carbie, and small manifolds. Driving a 4K hard, you notice that it won't want to rev past 5000rpm, and will get points bounce or something at about 5900-6000rpm. The points or valve bounce that it gets protects the engine, making it almost invincable. If you hold the throttle open, a pushrod will eventualy pop off the rocker, and you will be running on 3 cylinders. Just put in back on adn awy you go, no damage done.

To stop points bounce, get a electronic ingnition distributor. If you can;t find one, get the electronic guts out of a RB Gemini distributor, and use the matching coil and igniter.

To stop any valve bounce, get new or stiffer valve springs. This is the most expencive item, as you will probably have to take the head off. You can do some porting while at it.

That fixes the rpm problems. Now it will rev to 7500rpm? (I have not done this).

Then you need some more fueling and better air flow. You can use a bigger carbie. Probably one off a 2T, 3T or 18RC motor. I think the bolt pattern is the same, and the 18RC one has bigger throttles. You will need to change the primary jets to make it run will with the 1300cc motor. This is a cheap but effective option. You could also use a Webber down draft that would be better.

The exhaust could also be replaced with a tubular header and bigger system. I'm not sure how much this would wake it up, but the standard manifold is very small.

If the engine survices a bit more rpm now with the valve springs and electronic ignition etc, then its time for a new camshaft, with longer duration. This will move the power band up in the rpm range and give more total power.

also a popular conversion is to put weber's on them - my old ke55 had a weber from a ford cortina on it, had great induction noise and seemed to cope pretty well.

If you get a 3K head, port it, put in a Wade 40/70 cam, replace the standard carb with a set of 3K-B twin carbs (and get them jetted to suit), and get a set of extractors and a 1.75" exhaust, you will find it goes really well. One of the guys on the forum had a supercharged 5K, just for something a little left field.

I have a set of 3KB carbs for sale.

But like Norbie said, at the end of the day it's only 1.3 litres of old pushrod technology. It doesn't give you much to play with. Replace with 4AGE/3SGE tecnology.

Yah. The 4K is a pretty damned ballsless thing really speaking, but hey I love them and still have one in my pizza delivery car Cool

Playing round with a 3K head, cam, exhaust and carb will give it a bit of a kick in the arse, as will replacing it with a 5/7K - its all just a matter of whether you wanna spend that much on it! I leave mine standard, because that way its (nearly) unbreakable, no worries with busted rods from too many revs etc. I love the fact that you can (try to!) let loose on grass/gravel/mud with the car, holding it at max revs in 2nd/3rd gear for minutes at a time, and the bloody thing refuses to even overheat. Long as I feed it a bit of oil occasionally, and ignore those horrible rattling noises, it just keeeeps on going, very slowly. Personally though I'd replace it with a 4ag if you're looking to get any great gains - screwing round with exhaust/carbs only does SO much (I did it on previous 4k's i've had, havent even bothered on this one). Still, I always love to hear peoples ideas like plugging vacuum hoses, cornflakes box cold air intake or running it on various forms of vegetable matter.

In fact, lets start a thread of K engine stories, about how people have screwed an an astonishing 100% power increase (whats twice nothing? 2 thirds of stuff all!) and, best of all, how people have KILLED K engines Skull - Blink

Ok quick simple *cost free* modifications.
All carried out on a 84 KE70 4K with 263,000 klm.
1. Advance timing to 10 degrees.
2. Plug vaccum line to vac switch on drivers side inner guard/strut tower behind ign coil- bleeds off vaccum to dizzy in 3rd and 4th gears when at opperating temperature.
3. Drill 20 to 30 10mm holes in air filter housing - poor mans sports filter.
4. remove and clean carb. Resize primary and main jets, also air correctors. resize accel pump discharge nozzle. Modify accel pump linkage to increase stroke and therefore fuel discharge(ie shorten link from main throttle to accel relay rod by bending - increases stroke)
5. Remove muffler, cut access hole. weld in straight through pipe. If too loud drill 20 6mm holes in straight through pipe and fit a cover plate over access hole.
6 Drive it like a rental!

Please note that the above mods are specifically designed for the daily flog box that you dont want to waste ANY money on. Certainly better increases in performance can be had by spending money, but why not save it for a 4age???

Sorry, forgot to include 0-100klm/hr "performance" figures
When driven home after buying for $100 = max speed 70klm/hr after 18mins at full throttle
After resetting to std dwell/timing = 27.5sec
after mods as listed =17sec

note that the car has had the std 4.1:1 diff replaced at some time with a 3.9:1, so realistically 1.3l performace is behind the eight ball to start with

In fact, lets go one better: everyone with a K engine powered car whose biggest cost is the rego, meet up in some industrial street one night, have some DRAGS Up To Something Coppers can stand around and say nothing, won't be breaking no speed limits Shocked

Who knows, if we could get 50 k engined cars to show up, we'd have a grand total of around 53KW Twisted Evil (at the wheels maybe if it was a REAL cold night Nod )

You don't want to mess with my red KE30. It has one of these fore mentioned 4K engines (upgrade from the 3k), and it has the choke removed and jets drilled! The polution gear would have been removed, if it had any. The gears are swaped using a 4 speed floorshift and drive is put through a BorgWarner 4.11 diff. Rolling stock consists of 165 drag tyres on the front, and the same on the rear.

a definate improvement is to lose the 4kc dizzy and get the electronic one from the 5k - that made the thing rev much more freer - rather than the old points style setup.

if you want a list of popular cam grinds try here :

http://www.angelfire.com/vt/commodoress/rolla.htm

then there is the supercharging idea a dude called brad had a ke20 (yellow) with a sc14 on it from a 1g - running straight gas - then he sold it to a dude with a ke10 i think who put it on his k motor and he set it up with a carb and had it dynoed, i can't remember what it made but for the setup it was pretty good!

160? That all you could manage? Crikeys, mine goes off the clock (at an INDICATED 180) quite regular, actually it DID until I not longer had the balls to drive it that way (partly due to the complete lack of shockers on 3 sides!)

Oh yeah, and my lack of maintenace bit me last night, bloody ignition points! Made me walk home, little buggers Skull - Mad

sorry to dig up old thread, but..

balance the rods and pistons at howm to within 0.1grams.
camtech 609 regrind (277/284 with 0.435" lift),
shave 2.5mm off the cam towers.
www.performancesprings.com.au FJ20 dual valve springs,
home make your extractors, + 2" exhaust.
do much exhaust porting and combustion chamber shaping (ie valve unshrouding) to a 3K bigport head,
weber 34DMS, 150 mains with 170 air correctors

revs to 8000 easily, and regularly sees 7000 (ie every day for the last 2 years)... made 47.3rwkw on DD5 compared to 86kw 4AGE's making 55kw.

everyone who goes for a ride in my car says "it's not bad for a 4K" Wink

Not sure of the complete specs, but my friends dad has a 1969 vintage clubman with a very wild 3K in it.

It has twin 40mm sidedraught webbers, massive cam, specially forged pistons (originally ducatti?), very ported head, only runs on avgas with a pretty much straight through exhaust and puts out between 140 and 150 Hp.
And it weighs around 400Kg. Cool

With its Ford escort 4 sp gearbox, and a Morris diff, disks brakes on the front and drums on the rear my friend has done 1 min 18 sec laps around Mallala. Pulls 200kph easily down the main straight. Shocked

Fastest K series I know!

depends realy
wether u love tryin 2 kill it or wether u drive like a grandma.
and also the size of ur wheels if its just 12" or 13" ull b sweet get much bigger than that and the axels wont like you very much.
and also sux 4 driving around in tight carparks gota ride the clutch a bit otherwise ull b jumping all ova the place and evryone looks at u wierd coz ur car is making reali loud squealing noises aroudn evry corner.
its rela easy to lock. remove wheels, remove axles, undo tail shaft, undo a few 12mm nuts holding the centre in once center is out get your weapon of choice i.e type of welder. different people will tell you different welds are stronger i used the one wit da sticks and its sweet as. it will get reali reali hot so maybe leave about 30 mins inbetween each spider gear otherwise it can warp and make ya diff noisey. once all spider gears are welded the best thing u can do is chuk it in some sort of oil so it cools slowly and evenly 2 prevent any cracking. just chuking hot water on it will bend and crack the shit out of it.
wel there u go once its all done chuk it bak in and go test her out.
cheers scott

Hey
I too have a 4k 1980 COrolla Coupe, and was wondering what is the best way to get more power without engine swap. So far I'm going to put a 3k Head port. Twin Carbys. and got any other ideas? I don't want to do an engine swap cos I can't be stuffed getting rid of the engine and electronics are a b*tch. PMP020
great advice and sexy as pic of your car man!
Thanks
