W58 shifter sloppy Mon, 07 March 2005 01:18 Go to next message
Hey all,

In my ma61, the gearstick is so slack that you can put it in gear and the stick nearly returns back to where it looks like its in neutral.

I was wondering how to fix the excessive slop. I wouldn't think it would be just the bushing at the bottom of the stick.

The box from what I can tell has had a hard time, a lot of the syncros are worn out.

Thanks, hopefully someone knows what is going on.

PS. Hopefully Norbie doesn't slap my ass with SEARCH... as I have checked the w58 faq section and searched with litte result Smile

1. You would be amazed how sloppy they feel with a dead (or no) bushing.

2. Sometimes the pin that goes through the ball in the shifter can get bent and or broken too... that allows the shifter to twist as well as the normal north south east west movement.

3. The spring returns which cause the shifter to return to its central position often lose their punch and can make the shifter extremely easy to move east / west.

These problems are all pretty easy to fix and most parts are interchangable between toyota gearboxes.
Buy the bush new though as its only worth a few bucks from Toyota.

Have you checked the bushes....I think you'd be surprised how shagged they can get...

other than that there is a plate in the shifter stick assembly that has a slot in it that could be flogged out..

Cheers

It'd be the bushes. The part numbers are around... You just need to search!! Laughing

I used to have them in my iPaq, but then I lost the memory card. Sad

It is not reduced to the one nylon ball bush at the base of the shifter, there is another bush which presses into the corresponding selector gizmo - my car used to wear out the ball bush because the onther one was excessively worn - I replaced both and now it is good (been a year since I fixed it).

Yup.

The white bush referred to above is the one at the bottom of the shifter.
The green bush is the big one that positions the shifter in the cradle.

I was actually wondering about that... I had a quick read thru the w58 faq thread, I gathered that the white bush sits in the green bush??

Gimme a few hours, i'll pull it out and find a camera Smile

Nah. The white bush attaches to the bottom of the gear stick.
The middle bulgy bit of the gear stick sits on the green bush...

It'll make sense when you pull it all apart.

WRONG! lol

The white bush "pop's" onto the end of the shifter.

The green bush sits in the uppermost section of the gearbox (the shifter position), the gear shifter (the thing you use to change gears Razz) seats into the green bush.

Your right when you get it apart you'll see whats going on Wink

would lack of the green bush and the white bush in a W55 gear box
make it hard to find the gates if any?
I cant find any gears just walls where the gate should be.
I have found what appears to be neutral.

When my green bush was shagged, I had to twist the gear stick a certain way before it would get into any gear apart from 3rd & 4th.

I think everyone has overlooked Jason's comments.

You can replace the green and white bushes till your heart's content but the damn thing will still be sloppy.

You need to pull off the shifter housing and int he extention housing there is a small arm with a bushed pressed into it.

The gearbox needs to be removed from the car, oil drained and the rear casing removed to get this extention arm off.

Once off, take to a machinist to press out old flogged bush and press in a new one, around a new white bush.

I have just done this and its UBER tight.

BlackSupra - You are absolutely right.

I pulled my 'short' stick outta my ra60 and put it in the supra. When I pulled out the supra stick... there wasn't any white bush on at all! So yeah, just got back from testing it out. The difference is major! But there is still a bit of slop in and out of gears...

First step is to replace white/green bushing. When I have time to yank out the gearbox, ill be getting a new bushing pressed in.

Yes - part no = fux$7ick. Serves no real function to the tightening of things though.
