[AE86] Daniel's 4AGTE Sprinter Project. (56k'rs beware, death and burning). Tue, 08 March 2005 13:36 Go to next message
Hey all. Been on Toymods for a fair while now so I thought I'd post up some pics of my '86. Bought my Sprinter in August 2003, started the conversion last August, its taken me over 6 months now, I've been a lazy bastard, but I've also had to wait for parts, plus money flow is the enemy of all car projects lol. My motor is a 4AGZE AFM version from an '89 AW11 MR2, me and my cousin stripped the motor to a bare block, then I sent the heads off to be cleaned and tidied up, then we rebuilt the motor to pretty much stock specs with new rings, bearings etc. We pulled out the entire running gear from the car. 4AC, T50, tailshaft, only thing left is the stock diff. We put the motor back together and placed it back into the engine bay. ATM its just resting on the mounts and against the firewall, I've got a Niteparts bellhousing from New Zealand, plus a W58 gearbox and custom crossmember, once I get my clutch in the next few weeks I'll be throwing all this in and bolting it up so the motor will be sitting in its correct position.

I'll be running a Hybrid intercooler, oil cooler, remote oil filter mounting, rwd inlet manifold, a custom turbo manifold, hopefully running a t28, also will be running a Microtech L-TX8. Battery will be in the back, custom fuel setup with surge tank, 2x pumps etc. Once I find a T-series diff I'll be getting a 2-way LSD aswell. The car is street registered obviously, but I'll be setting it up for occasional drift duties, whole rear section of hatch behind the front seats has been stripped due to some brace bars that I've installed. Still alot of work to be done, should hopefully be running in a few months though money permitting. Smile

yeh I've read in other threads from a few months back that people were having trouble getting in contact with Niteparts or getting the bellhousings over here. I got the email address on the forums here and just emailed one of their guys named Brendan, he was an absolute champion about it, no qualms about sending over to Oz. I just put the money in their account, and he sent it over. It took a few weeks, he chased up the receipt number for me and a few days later it was here, Australia Post took their time sending me the pickup-slip as usual. The bellhousing looks almost factory, appears to be a very good cast and finish. I havent dummy fitted it yet but I'm confident it will fit, unlike an adaptor plate kit from a person on these forums. Rolling Eyes I'll let you all know how it fits and with the bigger clutch etc. Smile

Thanks dude. Yeah I spend a fair bit of time spraying and prepping shit, its pretty easy to do aswell. The block I sprayed with black engine bay heat resistant paint, the heads are silver like that because they were cleaned by the head/engine builder, with the rocker covers I used the same engine bay heat paint, but it took alot of coats to get it right, in the pics they look awesome, but close up one of them is a bit fucked, I gave them 1 coat, but then got them cleaned in a steam parts washer at my mates workshop, and it cleaned most of the paint off plus all the crap inside them, but some residue must have been still on there because when I sprayed them again the paint bubbled a bit, i tried to fix it best I could, but yeh when you use this paint on metal make sure the surface is 100% clean and dry and dont rush it. I'm pretty sure the bellhousing will accomodate a 230mm setup, so I'll try to find the big 4agze flywheel, which I think are around 230mm, and maybe 3 or 4 puck brass button with a solid centre. It sounds heavy I know, but a mate had a similar clutch setup in a Mazda and it was surprisingly comfortable. I'm not 100% sure on the clutch though, might get something that is able to slip a bit lol. Smile

I'm not 100% sure if the shifter location I've got on there is the correct one, I'll compare it to some pics on here with the 4 different locations, but I can change that easily anyway. For all your gearbox and diff needs, give Gearbox Express a call on 9605-1515, ask for Frank. Smile

Hopefully during the week I'll be getting the flywheel, clutch, another turbo, T-18 diff, and getting the tailshaft modified and balanced etc. Car should hopefully be running in about a month's time. Very Happy

The shifter position that is perfect is nearly impossible to find Sad

The one you have though, works just fine. The stick sits about 25mm further forward than the stock setup, but doesn't require any cutting of the trans tunnel.

Cheers

Hey Phil yeh I checked out the pic of the 4 versions of the W58 in one of the W58 threads and realised I had the very first shifter position, which as you said still works ok. The shifter stick has a bit of a rearward angle on it so yeh it should be sweet. Cant wait to get the bastard in there haha. Very Happy

I know the dude you're talking about cri_ag. He came into my work one day so I had a chat with him about his car. Its stock. 4a-c and all. I see your car around all the time. Very very nice. I used to see it at brooky tafe last year too. Later.

S13 suspension and S14 brakes going in the front, that T-18 diff pictured just needs a few licks of paint and a TA22 centre with my Cusco 2-way, brake booster and new master cylinder ready to go, once the motor and box are in next week I'll probably take the car to Wollongong to Brake Smart to get all the brake lines and shit done, and they can have the cunt of a job of putting the booster back in lol. Very Happy

Hopefully in a few weeks take it to get the exhaust done, then wired up, then the POS might finally run. Rolling Eyes
