its because they dont fall under the old 15 yeear rule and were an australian delivered model in limited numbers
same reason why youc ant ipmport an evo 6 or so and register it for road use - because we got a handful sent out as aussie models ..
and now that the 15 year rule has changed - i dunno if they can ever be imported and registered unless its a private import ( whereas you own it in japan/nz/wherever for a year - then bring it across )

from memory the 15 year rule doesnt stop you from importing cars
but would cost you a hella lot of money to get it registered in AUS
like a few G's!!

You can't register it at all (legit anyway), no matter how much you pay. Just move to Japan and teach english for a year then bring another one back, that is my plan

I think you can legitimately export it from the country, then apply to reimport it under different criteria...would cost you a motsa though and can't think why'd you do it.
Stu's right though...this car is ONLY eligible for compliance under personal import conditions...nothing else.
So...do the right thing and turn it into a race or rally car...at least use it as Mr Toyota intended.
All you guys who drive your GT4's to work would be making him cringe.

Can you swap in the drive train?
I thought the floor plans were different to accomodate the AWD?

I was specifically referring to the rear end?
Engine and gearbox drop in no problems of course.

the 165 has a different floorplan for the GT-Four, the 185 can be swapped, not sure about the 204/205 floorplans

hmmmmmmm shite aye, i thought they were all interchangable i.e. floorplan 2 suit awd even if it wasn't a XX5 model....huh......u would think they would produce the 1 floorplan 4 both models 2 cut down on costs.....but maybe chassis strength is much greater in the 205 and thats why they didnt use the 1 chassis 4 all if they did or did not do that...........
have fun understanding that cause im confusing myself right now........maybe not such a easy thing 2 do........
did some research and it has suposedly been done in the states (engine and drivetrain that is, 204 into 205 as they never got 205's there)...........but i cant find a lot of info on what was involved.....so maybe not a feasible option.........

mate, I don't know about the 205.. just find one and have a look
I know the ST184 has the same floorplan for the ST185 (as you suggested, to cut down on costs), mate mate's wife has a ST184 and it has the big hole in the firewall and the massive tunnel for all the g-box and 4wd componentry
but the ST165 was a special floorplan for just the GT-Fours.. as it was a new thing for them i guess

I Have a ST205 and can tell you the floor pan is totally different for a start fuel tank is behind rear bar, tunnel is not so much bigger but different shape and a lot of bracing and strengthening around diff cradle mounts.
The cost of doing this would be crazy after buying ST204 say $17,000 and ST205 1/2 cut say $6,000 and a floor pan and rear end putting it all together $heaps
But if any one wants one they can buy mine for $24,000 and you get all the good bits like the biggest brakes i have seen on a factory car, super strut suspension (no under steer),ABS,Etc.
MATT.

ask for Matt.
P.S This sounds like an add may be I should have posted it in 4 sale and wanted.
P.P.S If any is seriously considering this conversion you can look at mine to see how Toyota did it.

If you were going to undertake something like this, there would be better platforms to do it on, like the latest model Celica (can anyone say Millen Motorsports!) or the latest Corolla, ala the Fensport special and Neil Bates Motorsport ARC car.
For the cost of the 204 conversion you may as well just get the real thing...
