Hey all,

Where is the diagnostics plug on an 1986 ae82 twin cam???

I want to check the timing and you have to connect two of the diagnostic pins.

Thanks for your help.

Its the yellow plug located near the front windscreen wiper motor. It has 2 wedge female connections. Jump the connection with anything that conducts and presto.
Your engine check light should now be on/flashing.
timing is 10deg. BTDC as u prob know Smile

Thanks for the replies.

I thought it was the round two pin yellow plug in the left of the photo.

Cheers.

I know this is an old thread.

Can someone tell me which connector there is.
There is 3 i have doubts with

Round plug 2 vertical slots? Rubber cover?
Round plug with plastic cover
I heard this is the wrong one but squarish 1 vertical 1 horizontal.

Maybe a photo or drawing to show?
Thanks

I found that connector.
What does that connector do anyway. check light comes on in 10 blink intervals. supposedly .26 seconds.

Any help would be good.

That i realise. But crossing crossing the connector whilst doing the timing light? What is the actual result of it? Or is it a precautionary thing? Because i crossed the terminals and sweet jack all happened.

I"m not really sure what the go with doing it is, about the only info that i've found so far is that dueing normal idling the timing sits anywhere between 5 deg and 15 deg and by fitting a lump of wire (or SST 09843-whatever) stops the timing from moving around. But i've always just gone for the old style, hook the timing light to Cyl. #1 and to the battery and then use the "looks good, is good" theory. Cause the bloody hose is in the road Mad
Buts about all i can find on as to why...

Well not really, if there is a problem with the wiring(sensor dies or there is any other form of abnormallity) the ecu record this data and usually if its bad enough will go into limp home mode. when shorted the idle should drop a little and if you check the timing before you should have 15-18 deg btdc, shorten connector and it should drop to 10-12deg btdc

Shorting the connector tells the ecu to tell you what codes are present, thru the flashes of the check engine light.

You read and you will learn.

fwiw 10 flashes means nothing is wrong

Cheers
