whats the law about new wheels on an older car..
my corolla says on the driver's side door sticker that the tyres recommended are 165 x 78 on my stock 13 x 4.5" rims....
i just got some 14 x 6.5" celica rims, perfect offset, and want to know will 185 x 60's be legal??
i'm talking in SOuth Australia by the way, not other states..
need it layed out plain and simple please. dont want any trouble from the pig-in-a-box 's

without someone giving you the wrong sizes safest bet is to go to your nearest tyre shop and tell them wat car you have wat model they will be able to work out wat tyres u can have on there legally

assuming you currently have a 165/75/13 ( not a 165/78.. no such size exists.. at least not to my knowledge)
the 185/60/14 will be a perfect rolling diameter match.
however the rim size may be an issue.
if the standard wim is 4.5" then at least in NSW (yes i know your SA but im just giving you the info) you can only go legally +1" width legally.
id suggest contacting your local transit dep.. rta/vic roads/ etc (cant think of the sa equiv.) and ask them for the definitive answer. also worth asking your insurance company what they will cover. keeping in mind the wrong rims on there will void your insurnace... not good if you kjust backed into a ferrari.
so tyre no probs but rim may be too wide..

I know that in NSW its 1" thicker (5"-6")and 1" higher (14"-15") for legallity purposes, but bloody hell, if 6.5" rims with correct tyres for the speedo reading arent safer then 4.5" rims, ill shoot myself right here right know.
Who designs/thinks of these rules, seriously?
Cheers

In which case don't you just have to get an engineers cert?
