will the ra23 devalue? Mon, 21 March 2005 05:15 Go to next message
hey all...ive got a ra23 as a 3 year project. im planning on putting a 351 in it and keeping it for 10+ years. just wondering..do u guys think that it will devalue or increase in value at that time? i know the ra28 is rarer and better looking, i expect that to become a collectors car, but these cars just rust up to quickly, opinions appreciated, cheers.

if you restored the car to factory original then it might improve in value - but i think that once you substantially mod (and hence personalise) the car, it's value is only of significance to you.

am not knocking your own project - but the dollar value of collector's cars is the rareness of their pristine state, not the value of modifications.

however, if you spend the time/money on it for personal pleasure, then you will enjoy the 10+ years you expect the car to last for - and it's going to be of greater 'value' to you than an insurance valuation.

I doubt it will would improve in value as far as a collector goes, but there are also many people out there that love classic celicas and want one with a bit of go. I'm sure if you take the time and pump out a quality car, you should be able to get a decent price for it when the time comes to sell it.

Hi,

It all depends upon when you wish to sell it. Some people will like the hotted-up Celica, but don't expect to get back the money, time and effort you've spent on the car.

Some people may steer clear of such a heavily modded car. They think that it's probably been thrashed.

If you do it up to original specs then I'm sure you'll get much better value for money. These cars are getting old and rare - even the coupes (the liftbacks moreso) and a collector would pay a nice price for a pristeen original.

If your mods don't change any of the chassis, it is possible to keep the original parts and when you wish to sell the car you can either advertise the original parts are all available (so someone can bring it back to spec) or put the original parts on yourself and sell it as original spec.

i think what the guys here are saying is quite true, look moreso into restoring it to factory, and i'm not sure that you'll be able to get a 351 engineered?

i've heard that the 4L 1UZ can't be engineerer in NSW in the TA22, and that is a lower capacity than the 351 i'm guessing it'd be around ~250

i think if you wanna see if they'll devalue, it's worth looking at what the value has done thus far... a good condition, fairly original one, is worth about.... $5K... if that... originally bought from the factory, i'd bet they were atleast double that, can't be sure... but as a rule of thumb cars don't appreciate in value, only depreciate... that is unless you get one of those rocking horse shit rare cars... something that cost a mint when new... a XJ13 Jag for example... 'far as i know there's only 1 left in existence... +1 clone in perth... now that's worth a pretty penny Shocked

moral of the story... don't go spending big bucks on modding cars if you expect to make a money out of it...

thx guys, that helps. i wasent planning on selling it, it was just a lingering question. anyways, im still going to personalise it, alot of people ive spoken to think its a chicks car, which i disagree on, but im turning it into one anyway. originally i was going to just give it a face lift, acrylic black and pink pearl with some interior personalised features and a stock motor, but i think a little windsor is the go. all show and no go doesnt really work for me. even so, its only at cancer fix at the moment, so plenty of time yet, cheers Smile
