to back this up, I got my bare 1jz for $650.
That RB26 price is an absolute ripoff!!!
apples and oranges I say. For price comparison it should be rb26 vs 2jz. We all know who wins that one

I was thinking of this same idea but you started a thread already, if it was me it would be mz20 soarer vs silvia s13 and the lightest wouldbe my pic, i would use it for street use and track days, what are the weight differences with the mz20 and s13 silvia?.

Thats a lot, as i said i want a street weapon and a good trackday car, less weight is your objective on a track, or cruises up the old pacific highway .

OK for those that want to know, i have some updated Info , from a nissan forum.
Hey,
I'm actually doing this conversion at the moment (I'm also in the ACT by chance) and let me clear up some of the vague opinions said so far.
Firstly the 1jz and rb26 would have equivilant strength in bottom end, however the rb26 does have a superior head, coupled with larger standard turbos makes it the better 'stock' engine. The 1jz's cam profile and bore / stroke is designed for more low/mid range power than outright high end performance like the rb26. This can be traced to the vehicles it's used in notably the Soarer, Chaser and early Supras where effortless torque is important. However the rb26 is far more expensive $4000-$5000 for just the engine whereas 1jz's i've peronally seen sell for $1200 or less. (if you ever destroyed your engine completley, a turbo less engine is around $800!!).
The 'crappy little turbo's as someone mentioned earlier can flow 220rwkw on 1bar and aftermarket ecu / interceptor...how crap Not as much as the rb26 sure but a steel wheel upgrade and 260rwkw+ is only $1800 or so away.
Engine mounting is difficult sure but defintley not impossible. The engine sits about 110mm further forward so you'll need to fabricate an adapter from at least 6mm plate and weld it to the crossmember. The gearbox mount will also need to be changed and you'll need a custom tailshaft.
On the gearbox and everyone claiming there oh so hard to find, I'm using a w58 from a 2j NA. w58's ARE very plentiful and easy to find, it's the R154 off the Soarer that is a hard gearbox to find. Use the factory manual bellhousing or have one built by Dellow of Melbourne (or someone else). The supra 5 speed box has well known duriblity plus a cost of around $500.
I would only recommend doing this conversion if you do it yourself or with a mechanically able person otherwise the labour cost is prohibitive compared to just working the sr20. However if you want something different I'd take a 1jz over the rb26 option in this circumstance everytime.
Here's what my car has,
89 Silvia converted to Onevia
1jz-gte
Twin HKS 2510 turbo kit
Haltech e6k ecu
w58 gearbox from 2j supra
Nissan r230 (9") diff from TT 300zx
245/40 17" wheels.
3.5" exhaust with twin 3" cats (muffler coming).
No rear seats, partially stripped interior, no Aircon, no power steering.
Other bits have yet to be bought like injectors, fmic etc.
Hoping for 300rwkws.

Sounds good mate. Have you already got that turbo kit?
BTW I am sure there will be something that you didn't think of that will need to be modded. It always happens! Maybe because the turbo is on the opposite side of the engine compared to nissans
Good luck with it.
Hope to see it on the 1jz list soon

Another reason a 1j swap into a S13 over say an MZ10/20 is the absolute wealth of aftermarket suspension / body parts available for the loveable s13. It's the perfect package, I'd love to be able to buy some coil-overs for my car, but it aint gonna happen.
