ST-162 3SGE engine swap Tue, 29 March 2005 13:08 Go to next message
Hey guys

I'm a newbie so dont laught at my lack of know how!
I'm about to purchase a 1986 ST-162 Toyota Celica off a mate, however the engine has been run into the ground due to lack of oil! Correct me if I'm wrong but I've assumed that it now requires a replacement engine.

I've rung around and the best price i could get for a 3S-GE was around $900 plus an extra $400 on top for installation. Am I getting ripped off blind here? Is it worth installing the engine ourselves? (We have all the necessary equipment to do it safely!)

BTW is anyone here selling a 3SGE engine or know of anyone doing so? Please let me know asap

I would appreciate it greatly if I could get some advice from you guys

Cheers

If you have all the gear already its worth installing the engine yourself.
I would have thought about $500 to $900 is the going rate for a used 3S-GE engine.

Just remember if you do buy another engine you won't know what condition it is in. Even low km engine's can be deceptive.

Ah ok I didn't think of that! What are the things I should look for when buying another engine? Is it dangerous to assume that engines from wreckers and places like Toyo parts are of decent quality? Do these sort of places usually givew any kind of warranty?

Thanks

They should give you at least 30 days warranty.(Make sure it is in writing !)

If they won't give any warranty, go elsewhere.

Cheers
