EOI: Carbon Drop Vented Bonnets for AE86 Levin Wed, 15 December 2004 03:38 Go to next message
Hey guys,

I will be selling carbon bonnets in the near furture, once i work out with supplier pricing and cost. These are made in Australia.

These bonnets will be made to the highest quality, not laid normally rather using the vacuum method to produce straight laid carbon sheets.

I am also looking into dry carbon manufacturing now as well.

Just wanted to know if you guys interested in any drop vent bonnets. There would be a few types of bonnets i can get. For looks and for Full race super light weight bonnets.

Pricing:

Vented bonnet made of mainly FRP 1 layer carbon $950-$1000 delivered Australia wide

Super light weight carbon bonnets, with very thin layer of fibreglass with the rest comprising of carbon, very light weight, looking at close to 5-6kg or less. $1900-$2000 Delivered

I CANNOT manufacture the jblood 3 louver ones at this time, cost and difficulty in producing them will not be viable. If you want jblood, i can only offer the real deal.

This is just my plans at the moment and plan to take action early next year so let me know what you guys think.

I will be also seriously looking into producing Levin Jblood wide front fenders and rear quarters next year.

Cheers

Wei

how much would that cost?

That would probably be maybe 100-200 cheaper, I am not too sure on pricing on that one, once mould are produce, I can give you more information about it.

yeah basically something like that.

It depends what mould i want to use or whether i want to design one.

I have 2 genuinne jblood hoods triple louver probably coming in next early next year, may use them as a base and simplify it to single vent or may design the bonnet using a standard bonnet and a universal drop vent.

I have been told that the 3 louver style is too difficult 2 produce so going stay away from that for now.

Cheers

I would be interested. I need a bonnet very soon. I would be happy with a full fibreglass one, no vents. Does anyone sell them in Australia now? With or without vents?

The FRP ones with one layer carbon would be basically what you have on the market now with most bonnets for silvias and skylines.

The super lightweights ones will be extremely light and very strong as well. But very its very expensive, may be more viable to produce the bonnets made of Frp and one layer carbon.

I am not sure anyone who makes ae86 bonnets at the moment. I can get genuinne jblood ones whether frp or Carbon, but from japan expensive due to freight.

I would be interested in the FRP with one layer of carbon, with a drop vent. Vent im after is like the Jblood single vent.

A place in melbourne (Tiche?) sells carbon fibre AE86 bonnets , but without the drop vent. From what I have seen, I would like the bonnets to be of this quality.

I can assure you bonnets will be made to the highest quality and strength. The manufacturer produces carbon products for race purposes and I have seen some of his work which is excellent quality.

I have seen several carbon bonnet floating around with no vent.

I want to produce vented once cause it helps with extracting heat and there not many places readily available.

I should be able to produce the bonnet without vent as well.

maybe some vents that could be put into te stock bonnet, people could just cut a big square hole in their extisting bonnet, and pop it the vent straight in. cause then more people could afford it, and it could fit in any car

Hi Driftking,

thanks for the feedback, there are already universal drop vents or other vents on the market that you can purchase to fit to your original bonnet, this does extract heat but it does not reduce the weight of the bonnet. Even FRP bonnet with 1 layer carbon will be substantially lighter than stock bonnet.

Again $900-1000 delivered is just a rough estimate. Once production and plans take place, the price will most likely be less. Exact price, im not too sure yet. See how things go for the new years.

sorry if this is dumb question but why do they have to weigh so much? one layer weighing 6kg? From my work with fiberglass I would think it should be less, but maybe its a damn thick layer, or am I drasticly underestimating?

the fibreglass with 1 layer carbon will weigh a lot more than the super lightweight bonnets which comprise of mainly full carbon. 5-6 kg are all over estimates, I have been told they will most likely weigh less.

Again all these are all estimates and nothing in regards to weight, style and even producing the bonnets have been confirmed yet.

Once the prototype has been made, I can provide you with more information

hI aeEIGHTYsix,

When my turbo ae86 was on the road, the engine ran very very hot (some crazy heat degree as i had temp reading/sensor under the bonnet), even with the rear end of bonnet lifted, not extracting enough hot air. Thats the reason y I will be manufacturing the carbon vented bonnets. Should help alot to extract hot air.

for the record, my bonnet is 4.3Kg and its FRP webbing with a few laers of carbon layed on top.

so a full carbon bonnet would be craaazy lightweight

Ok guys,

update on the bonnets, its been the hard yards and many delays due to couriers etc. but moulds and prototype bonnet will be ready in about 2 weeks.

To give you more information about who is manufacturing these bonnets, I have chosen a top carbon producing specialist to manufacture these bonnets and hopefully other components to come for ae86. Pricing on bonnets not set yet at this stage but around $750-$850 per bonnet plus shipping or pick up in melbourne.

Bonnets will be frp based and carbon layer top to save on cost as full carbon bonnet will cost thousands. The designed will be based on the single drop vented most popular design.

TOPSTAGE in melbourne will be producing these bonnets for me.

They have build a excellent reputation in producing some high quality carbon products for nissan, and I have appointed them to do all my AE86 products.

For more information about Topstage, please go to

http://www.topstage.com/AeroDynamic/A.html

or

http://www.topstage.com/

and go to products, and you can see their carbon products for their silvias.

Again all AE86 products developed by topstage will be produced exclusive for me and I will be doing SALES on all AE86 carbon products.

Will keep you informed very soon.

Anything contact me on 040 300 3131 or visionr@iinet.net.au

Regards

i don't mean to be rude but i got a quote from topstage sometime ago and they said they will do the AE86 bonnets for anyone for a flat price of around 800 from memory... would be cheaper with a group buy... In fact they said they could do anything for an AE86. pleast don't missunderstand me when i say i just dont like to see ppl trying to take advantage of ppls lack of initiative to contact topstage directly as my experience with topstage was that they would prefer to directly deal with the customer than handle it off thru other companies... im trying to be polite as possible but victorian buyers esspecially would be better going thru topstage directly seeing as thou they are based in melbourne... i think this deal speaks to more interstate buyers...

the fact you stated that you will be doing AE86 products EXCLUSIVLY for them really spoke out to me as this goes against what freddy has said to me about the making of his carbon products. I hope you can respect my post enough to not say 'if u dun like it dun buy it' and come up with a more dignified reply...

saying all that however i can highly recommend topstage, they do A+ grade work and have used them to make a few bits n pieces for me in the past and will continue to use them

No Offence taken Cool and my reply to a post would NEVER be 'if u dun like it dun buy it' - thats just no bloody business ethics

Freddy will be using my original straight bonnet which I have prepared here in perth and sent to him from Perth to Melbourne so he can cut it up and produce the design and create a mould for it. I approached him in order to develop parts for AE86 and its an agreement made between us quite some time now starting of the with bonnets. If you look at my first post dated dec 2004, I have already spoken to freddy previously before this to organise these bonnets. Delays in the bonnet was due to me being overseas as well as him being overseas as well.

I was told by freddy last time that there was someone interested in carbon bonnets, at that stage i was still preparing my standard bonnet in order to send to him so that he can start the designing and prototyping. He also told me that a customer did approach him for carbon bonnet but he told them to speak to me, I am not sure if that was you or not, but at that time the bonnet was still in preperation.

He probably quoted or estimated you 800 based on rough price of how much the bonnets were going to retail for as i have discussed with him before what the retail price on these bonnets were going to be.

You have to see that I am not just buying bonnets of him to resell whereby anybody can go direct to him, I have approached him with my original bonnet to prototype a design and same with any other products which i will develop with him. Its basically I "contracted" him to produce my items for me. This thread applies to ALL people in Australia, even if you are in melbourne/VIC, yes you can go pick up or buy bonnet from freddy but it will have to go through me ultimately as the stock of bonnets which i paid freddy to produce will be kept there. Freddy may forward customer onto me to deal with the sale or he may sell it to you and let me know he sold an ae86 bonnet as I will have to keep track of stocks etc. Its basically the same thing anyway.

I hope this has clarified and I have answered all your questions. My aim was to produce high quality vented carbon bonnets and thats the reason why i did approach freddy to get the job done right and he has agreed to produce them for me exclusively as his focus is on nissans anyways. If you are in melbourne, you can contact me to order bonnet and pay me for the bonnet and then go pick it up in melbourne as I will be payin freddy up front to produce 5-10 bonnets for first product line up and of course always more stock if the bonnet sales goes well as I know the quality will be definetely there.

Regards

WEi

I am sure if you contact freddy directly, he can make anything for you out of carbon fibre, he does alot of one of custom jobs for customers, but i have approached him as a business to produce the bonnets in more quantities than 1, and as many people know, he has a good reputation in producing carbon products.
