Corolla upgrade Sat, 02 April 2005 14:03 Go to next message
Hey all,

Do u guys think its worth upgrading my AE92 Seca to the AE102 Seca?
Pros:
- 1.8L 7AFE compared to the 1.6L 4AFE that i am currently running
- less km's since its newer
- better interior, quieter and creature comforts
- 4 wheel disc brakes with ventilated fronts
- POSSIBLY ABS (or its upgradable)

Cons:
- its an upgrade... so it would cost more
- styling of the AE102 Seca isn't really MENACING like similar Honda Civic hatchbacks

Do u guys think the AE102 would be a good platform to start modding the car?

Thanks for all your comments.

Yeah i've got a AE102 1.8ltr, its a good car but like it heavy...
Very smooth and stuff, ABS does not come standard it was like an option or something. I like the car cos it is small and its really easy to get into parking spots Very Happy . ohh and white hatches look good for those cars Very Happy (if u couldn't tell, mines white lol). Good luck with that and i hope u get a good car in the end!

Depends what you want out of the car. I love my AE102, then again I'm comfortable with the fact that it's not a straight-line demon and it's not "fully sick". It's damn good on petrol and it's comfortable (at least, it was until the suspension & exhuast went on).

Platform to start modding? Depends on what mods you want. Performance wise, there's the usual Corolla-type stuff. The 7A-FE isn't exactly a ball-tearer, even after spending a bit of money. Asthetically, there's not many off the shelf bodkits around. Most of the ones I've seen have been custom.

mods in mind:
- rims (wouldn't go much bigger than 16x7)
- suspension work (springs, struts, swaybar, strutbar)
- muffler (humble 2 hole exhaust similar to 92ish celicas)
- k&n panel air filter (only worth it if it comes on discount)
- FXGT side skirts (if i can somehow get it cheap)

i've narrowed down the model i want to be the AE102 RV as it comes stock with:
- 1.8L 7AFE engine
- rear spoiler

I don't really expect much in terms of performance, no 4AGE stuff thats for sure. The grunt of the 1.8L should come in very handy i assume?

ive got a ae102r, sedan model basically, motor is prety good, wouldnt really call it grunty, lol, but is ok, holds it own quite eaasily against similar model from other makers, honda civic, lancer, 323, etc, with my cat-back exhaust, is slighty quicker than my mates 93 liberty awd, and mates 86 civic sedan(stock), so yeah, u will be happy with it.

hey tats: u own a white rolla hatch, low with exhaust, and rims, i think 15 maybe 16 inches? multi spoke? by any chance?

Not that one. Mine's dark green, lowered on 15" ROH rims. I don't think I've seen yours around?

The rims make a big difference in cornering and steering, my stock rims felt like they were only 1" wide, a bit sketchy Confused I've got 15x6, much better.

Suspension work goes a long way, I've got low king springs, Gabriel shocks and a Whiteline strut brace. It's a package I'm happy with, though I'm looking at new springs, the Kings are too soft. And a good swaybar wth new bushes would be fantastic too.

A full exhaust will open up the top end a little, but not any huge gain. I got a K&N panel filter, almost no difference there from my judgement. I'm thinking of gutting the airbox to see if that does anything, maybe make up a backyard CAI.

The 7A-FE will never be anything special. That said, I *just* got away from an AE82 twincam once.
