How early did you start your interest in cars? Fri, 01 April 2005 22:31 Go to next message
I went back to NZ recently when one of my family members was not well and happened to find a whole lot of photos that my grandfather took as an amatuer photographer including this one of me on my Dads 1600 datsun rally car, this was the car I later raced at about 16 in motorkhana's

http://ira11y.qnix.com.au/MeondadsDatsun.jpg

ok so its slightly embarassing but it got me wondering how old you were when you first became interested in cars.

I can remeber even earlier than this photo learning to reverse my grandads new RX3 out the driveway sitting on his lap Smile , guess it was always in the blood Razz

Hi,

Hehehehe... nice pic.

I think I was a sperm when I started liking old cars. My dad was never into old cars but he was an old biker and had a Sunbeam, Norton 500cc single cylinder, something called an Indian (?) and a Harley 1200cc with side-car. He's got all these old pics of him when he was younger and his bikes.

He got rid of them after he got us kids, but he had an old car with a dickie seat in the back. But he sold it when I was a wee lad. When I was learning to drive he owned a Valiant Charger 770. That was a big and pretty fast car to learn on, but gee I had some fun with it. Smile

He sold that for an Escort RS2000, then he went mental and bought a LiteAce, and now he owns a Nissan Pulsar. Crying or Very Sad

dad was a mechanic for the early part of my life, before school and on school holidays i spent my time at his service station.

the only notible car he had was an orange valiant pacer but that was before i was born, i remember tho i used to drive home the last 5 minutes from school on his lap in our grey MS57 crown wagon we called the "big bear".

then when he did auto transmissions at home i used to operate the jack for him. By then i was regularly watching carlos sainz in the ST185 celica battle it out against the lancia deltas, and i used to build leggo rally cars and service crews. And also remember watching nines wild world of sports for a run of saturday mornings they used to play climb dance, shame this was before i could masturbate.

i wanted a SS torana as my 1st car but my old man said that if i got anything other than a toyota, nissan, honda, BMW or mercedes that he wouldnt fix it.

i didnt really start playing with the RA40 until after a few years the engine started to die, i found toymods and it was all down hill from there. ARGH

My interest certainly wasn't inherited from my father. His thoughts on cars were that they were just a means of getting from point A to point B. He wouldn't even wash his cars.

What did spark my lifelong interest is in the late 60's when I was about 8 or 9 my cousin took me for a drive in his 64 Vette. It made quite an impression on a very young Gregory.

Cheers, Greg.

I blame my brother, he was a mechanic he had a few warm v8's and I remember doing 200+ kph in that gold ute and i remember because i was too small to see over the dash all i could see was the speedo Razz other early memorys include siting in the back of that ute helping re-build the 351 with "goodies", shame (lucky) he didnt keep that car long enough for me to drive it. due to most of the local police knowing it VERY well.

I grew up driving Camrys and Corollas so I never had much interest in cars.

Then I bought the Celica when I turned 21... Found that cars can be fun to drive! Drove it like a maniac. Killed the engine. Ripped it apart, fixed it, put it back together (with no prior knowledge of working on cars and using the Haynes manual as a guide). It later developed a major oil leak so I ripped it out and put a twin turbo six in so that I could make the most from the chassis, then met up with Luke and formed one of the small group of people who later on became known as Toymods.

I got hooked on cars when my Uncle used to drive me home after being babysat. I would have been 6.

The car was a 7M-GE Supra. He'd take me down a hill (flooring it) that went down (steeply) then straight up again. I'd chant "Faster, faster, faster, FASTER! He'd always be too happy to ablige.

Ah, the joys of being 6.

I've been hooked on Toyota's ever since!

I've been interested in cars since I was around 13 or 14? There were always car races on TV and uncle that was into cars. But the one that really turned me was setting my eyes on the (then) new JZA80. I fell in love and knew I needed to get a Supra. Heh, I own one now, just too bad its not a '94 but an '84 model. Very Happy

Always had cars on the brain, from before I can remember. My fascination for Toyotas started in 1990 (I was 6) when Dad bought a copy of Motor magazine, with the Celica SX vs. Holden Calibra test. I read the article (i.e. looked at the pics) so many times that the magazine fell apart, and Dad had to go buy another copy Embarassed

I was about 15.. Not real sure why suddenly got the urge to get into cars as my dad hates cars/mechanic work. But yeah wanted something old that I could get my hands on and learn about the workings of it all. Didn't actually want to purchase a running car, but more something broken that I could learn to fix.

Had a foundness for the style of the early Celica's but knew nothing about them.

So sold heaps of stuff to friends and raised $800 to by the RA28. Almost got dis-owned by my parents.

i used to watch the group A touring cars from the age of about 5 with my dad and started following Skaife when he drove the GTR's. I still remember when they had his car on display at my local mall.
I was really good at picking race winners. I remember one round at Simmons Plains, when my dad said so who is gonna win the next race i go number 30, which was Glenn Seton at the time drving the peter jackson ford and sure enough he won i mean wtf.

Went to my first rally at 16 days old. Always interested in cars. Dad & uncle were mechanics so it just went from there. Never did it all for me though. Had to do it myself but would always help with answers and occasionally a hand. Wouldn't have half the knowledge, experiences or memories without it.

First car I restored was a Renault 10 (River would know, he's old too). drove that around while I restored (and I mean every rivet, nut and bolt) a 1966 Land Rover. Drove that while doing a Range Rover. Then the Crown.

Now, no license, debating and anticipatng the next project.

Hereditary for me, My dads a valiant loving mechanic (3 RT chargers and 4 S series) My grandfather was a taxi driver and only drove valiants. My first car was a tripple carbed valiant charger. If I could only afford to keep petrol up to a hemi 6 Sad Bah the celica goes harder than any valiant i've driven Evil or Very Mad

I have some pics of me at home working on dads trailer at about 18 months old.

I also have photos of my son at about 10 months old on the creeper under the celica.

i have been into cars for as long as i could remember. i used to wait at the gate at the front of my yard (200m driveway) after skool for dad to come home just so i could drive his car up the driveway. when i was very young i would just steer, but as i got older i would drive up my driveway. then when i was even older i would drive 500m down the road or 500m to my house (i live in a rural area).

then i got hooked on motorbikes for a while (i still work at a motorbike shop partime), and after hurting myself repeatedly and seeing my mate laying on the road with a broken feema Embarassed (spelling?).

anyway i started chasing around for scrub bashers and the first one i got was a RT40 corona Shocked (69 model) Laughing . we thrashed that thing and it would not die...no matter what. then, after searching for another scrub basher, i found an RA40 coupe (1977 model). i took it home and got it going, and couldnt belive the power (18RC with extractors Laughing ....i was only 14yr. old). that celica was far from repair, so i kept the gearbox and motor as a spare and told myself i would get another.

a few weeks passed and i was told of one for sale by my brother. we went and checked it out and it was a excellent project car (yes, the one i done up Smile Wink ). it was advertised for $500 but i talked him down to $200 Evil or Very Mad .

so i got that home and thought i would just give it a "quick" paintjob and get it registered...... Laughing ...well 12months passed and i painted it(subaru WRX blue), had put a 18rg in it (i rebuilt it myself), and registered it!!.

i done all the work myself with minimum help from others (guidance of spray painter). i think i am one of those people that look at something and just see how it goes together. my dad hasnt helped me at all; he is one of those people that think they just to get you from A to B, so he dont care of washing or making his car look presentable.....he fixes rust with pop riveting a piece of an old road sign over the hole, then painting it with a brush Laughing

i just turned 17 the other week....so im only a youngen Embarassed

see my sig for pics of my car

I remember being about 3 and having my favourite hat,it was a porsche cap Very Happy white with black emblem,by 5 i had completly rebuilt my dads celica while he went down the shop to pick up some siggs, not happy with the power I did my first engine conversion later that afternoon 351 into 76 celica, Laughing Razz

Well the cap bit is true and I remember being able to name most cars by the age of 6 as they went past in traffic Very Happy ,surprisingly i didnt follow a career in cars and have only just done my first restoration at the age of 25 Rolling Eyes

I was pretty much the same i could name all the cars by around 5 and when started reading the mags around 7-8 the main thing i looked at were pics and stats. I think at one stage i could pretty much state the power output engine size of any car that was listed and if listed there acceleration figures.

my dad has been watching all forms of motorsport for as long as i can remember, actually being a kid i used to get pissed off cause dad was always watching in and there was a time when i hated it. i soon came around Laughing

dad and his brother used to novice rally in a mk1 cortina and had been doing road closures and checkpoints out in the bush. then nothing happened for ages, i got into it and joined my local car club, and it has come full circle now cause dad just did his first autocross, and first motorsport in about 20 years, in his recently roadworthied sprinter, with me in my celica just last weekend.

can you feel the bonding Laughing

as funny as it sounds i learnt heaps as a kid playing street rod 1 and 2

manifold goes on block, carbie goes on manifold, transmission goes on back of block, little kid, simple stuff, good foundation.

man i love those games i still have them on my oldskool gamer PC.

"You just dropped your transmission, KLUTZ!" haha funny.

that game and stunts were mad, you can now race the king, they were'nt to bad in sense of reality, the cars slowly came out of tune, you could blow the gearboxes damn codes to get into the game though, i borrowed then game off a mate and then wrote down the codes but we lost the sheet so we couldn't play it any more.
Only prob with that game was once you got the corvette no one wanted to race you. Was always fun to rip out the corvette engine and throw a six in and put triple two barrel carbs on and throw the corvette engine into that shit car just fo kicks. If you strip everything off that heap of shit car the worst in the game you can then sell it for 28000 or something good or cheats whats sadder is that I remember this not having played the game for over 8 years or so.

I remember seeing the ST18X series celica's in a dealership when I was about 10 years old and always wanted one.
When was 17 and looking for a new car I looked back and thought WTF was I thinking.
Then a few years later I saw the ST185 GT4's and knew I had to have one!

I remember being about 10 years old and seeing a near new celica st205 I think? My dad used to have hotted up fords when he was younger and called it a "sillycar". I got a little offended at this as I rather liked it Smile Then not too long after that I spotted a similar looking car but much tougher looking. My first JZA80 supra sighting Smile From then on, I always looked around for them. Wasn't interested in much else though.

Then in grade 11 when my friend's were buying car magz I would read them. Just crappy Hot4's etc. so I was bread into a riceboy. When I bought my first car, I didn't car how it looked or how fast it went, just how loud the stereo was Razz

I still have a good stereo today in my daily driver but thank god I am not a riceboy anymore Smile I shouldn't say this, but I once bought a copy of "best bodykits" Embarassed There were 2 JZA80's in there though.
