PC's and Car Stereo's

I've got a question about using a car sound system setup for you pc? i.e front/back spkrs + sub etc. nothing major or even expensive, i was thinking of using the jaycar type of stuff or anything cheap but decent quality sound, or at least better than buying the actual pc spkrs packs.
I just wanna know if it's possible. Or has anyone done or tried it?
My questions are;
- If it's possible do you need a decent sound card to support it?
- Is it cheaper than buying a set of pc speakers (5.1)
- What are the advantages/disadvantages
- If possible, would the sound come out better or would the pc speakers sound better. or is that also depending on sound card?
- Does anyone know how to do it if its possible?
Thanks if anyone can answer this!

1) It's not always necessary, but I'll always recommend one.
2) Probably not once you factor in the amps to run it all.
3) It'll most likely sound better. It will be more expensive and bulky.
4) A better sound card will sound better but thats irrelevant. Providing you chose your drivers okay, the PC speakers should get reamed.
5) Yes it's possible, just check your amp doesn't mind running 4 ohm speakers. A simpler option would be to pick up a cheap semi-decent home theatre system and use that instead.
If you're wanting to run a car stereo amp as well, you'll need a 12V power supply, and personally, I'd be happier just having a normal amp.

Ive done it.
You'll turn your monitor blue if the speakers are too close - due to the magnetism.

Car speakrs aren't ideal in this situation.
A small metal box is hardly the ideal acoustic environment. Seeing as this is exactly what a car is the speakers are made to suit. Generally speaking i think you would be better with a cheap home stereo.
Saying that, if I had all the bits, I'd do it!
Wait a sec i do have the bits.... hrmmmm

that's what I wanna do in the future!
get an EPIA, , hard drive, small-ish LCD screen for me to install somewhere so that it looks like a stock item, and then I'll be happy.
Even had the idea of since you need a mouse, to get a trackball, and to cut a hole in the dash or centre console and install the trackball there. That way you get a mouse pointer and it all looks stock part of the car!
Anyway, bit OT....
A car audio system hooked up to your PC should sound great. good luck with that!

Touch screen? It isn't as hard/exy as you think...
My mate has done one of these installs very cool. Also put in a couple of cameras on continuous loop.
