Methods to unscrew a nut that doesnt move Wed, 06 April 2005 03:10 Go to next message
hey this isnt really that technical and maybe shouldnt be in this section. But anyways, you guys must have run into this problem at least once in ur lives. How do you loosen a nut that wont budge. Besides a screwdriver and a hammer and wd40 what other methods are there?

Hi,

WD40 works, but you gotta give it some time. If that doesn't work you can try heating the nut and hope it will expand enough to loosen a bit. If it's a little nut you may be able to use a pair of sidecutters or pincers to grab the nut, dig into it a bit, and free it.

If it's a large nut then you can angle grind it on two opposing sides (assuming you can get the grinder into place) and this gives you extra purchase for a wrench of spanner.

Weld a good length of bar onto the nut. Lean on the bar. Watch as either the nut comes off or you snap the stud. Either way it's off.

Try some penetrant rather than wd40, repco or somewhere will sell it.

Other mentioned methods that I've had good results with are
hammer it: give it a whack, helps free stuck things
heat it: give it a blast with an oxy or something, but not too much as the idea is to expand the nut but not the bolt.
extend it: the longer your tool, the more leverage (power) you have

Try not to do this Confused

i reckon some vicegrips and one long arse pipe to turn it if you got the space, otherwise just hit the visegrips with a hammer to turn them

I tend to like sockets over spanners/vice grips/nut f*ckers(shifters) for tight nuts. As it applies force to 6 corners of the nut as opposed to two, and hence tends to strip the bugger a lot less.

the gas axe AKA oxy torch AKA many other things is fantastic, you just heat up the nut and most of the time you can blow the nut off without killing the bolt or if your really shitty blow the whole thing off and wack a newie in in about 5 seconds... takes longer to drag the bottles out!

Penatrant is awsome stuff give a sec or two to get in there.

Some times tightening a little can loosen it. It works with screws never had to do it on a nut.

Leveage is also the the big thing bits of pipe on the breaker bar work wonders

use a Impact wrench, like a impact screwdriver but with a socket end! Invest in one, they are great when taking body panels off where the head of the bolt rounds out easily or the thread is rusted in the body. They arent very expensive and worth the money, i use mine all the time.

Nutsplitters are pretty handy things for this at times.

well from easiest/simplest tools to most difficult,

get some penetrant onto it and use ring end of spanner to apply
force whilst hitting with hammer. sockets are on the wrong plane
and wont do it if its really tight.

impact wrench if you have one

use a nut splitter, about 10 bucks from tradetools or

grind it off if you can do it without grinding anything else lol.

iv never tried heating it but have heard of it

weld a bar onto it and turn it

The good old 25inch long bar gives the leverage. If all else fails grind the thing of and keep the thread so you know what to get when getting a new. Smile

long.
