Thanks mate, the darker colour transforms the car, but don't look closely, the acrylic paint deteriorated pretty bad by the time I retired the car, crows feet everywhere!

No sideskirts, front lip was some generic fibreglass mould that i've seen on heaps of oldschool cars that just happened to fit. It was all cracked & chipped in the end though, so it went with the car to the metal recyclers

Yeah acrylic doesnt last too long if its not treated right

The first vid is a 1983 T-18 and the second is the 1979 T-18 thats in the photos above btw its still going after those jumps, albeit with -5 degress of camber on the right front wheel curtesy of a bent strut and a busted strut top on the other side

haha, nah that is its current colour from the oxidisation, need to get a photo of it washed one day, the paint wore off or something on the bonnet too, can see white throug what looks like scratches all over it, when we painted it we didnt do many coats though
Now has 2" rust holes in several places

May the record note that I love T18s. If I ever have the money then I will build one into a dedicated track drift special. I even almost bought a Jap-spec Sprinter shoe-horned into a T18 earlier this year.
Usually look damn ugly, but they are cheap to replace.
Phil, that car looked pretty nice. I like the quad coil packs on the 3T as well.

yeah its a corona one, not sure which one, it came on my wreck i bought a while back.
had a lot of trouble finding a rebuild kit for it as we werent sure what rona it was off, and yeah had to swop the resoviars so it didnt hit the strut tower.

hey, i own a T-18 and im from hobart where abouts in tasmania are u? anyway i have a 3TGTE that needs rebuilding im thinking forged pistons strenthened rods and a port polish, im just saving up for the engine internals but i have mostly everything else but a surge tank for the conversion and i have a computer lined up,
i wont bother posting any of my pics as it isnt much to look at at the moment. its light blue with 13inch shit spitfire rims and window tint paint is in good cond just a bit of surface rust on both sides under the chrome garnish on the pillars which will hopefully be getting fixed soon.
fark me that black T-18 of yours looks very tuff did u have v4 simmons on it at one stage? im looking at getting 15x7 globes or ROH chicanes i think they look amazing. i love what u did with yours

The rear bumper could double as a park bench I'm not sure what toyota was thinking when they made them hang out so far.
Yeah, the car was actually a mixture of parts from an early & late series TE72. Plastic Bumpers & rear lights were from the later model, headlights are still the old style.

By the way, if you want a 2 door sedan then build one. Would be much cheaper than importing one.
A very simplified recipe -
1 4 door sedan *E7*
1 2 door wagon *E7*
Unstitch pillar, rear side panelling from wagon and transfer bits to sedan.

Just found an old old site a friend put up. Has some pics of my old T18s. Hopefully there's some amusement to be had:
Ed Pension, the original brown one. Rear ended while I was out of the country.
And the replacement white POS. Stripped and towed once I got the Sprinter.

As discussed in another thread, time to bring this one back.
So whats new with everyones t18's?
We recently put a set of 2tg 40mm solex on the budget racer t18, extractors and 2.5" side pipe on it. Was worth 2 seconds a lap on a track which was previously 50 seconds a lap.
Got a few videos I could put up, but on dialup its going to take a while.

Since that last picture of my T-18 it has been retired from farm duties and replaced with a 3TC (from one of my T-18s of cource) powered KE15. It will be resurected soon so we can chop the roof of and get some video of it baddock bombing with no roof
After looking for a replacement T-18 for a year at the right price, i ended up with an AE71 so that will soon be recieving a budget 2TGTE setup

Yeah they are starting to get a bit few and fair between, that said I know of 2 around here, other than the 2 we own. Ones in a wrecker, stipped with all parts inside and rust free! (SHOCK!), the other has been sat in the front yard of an abondoned house for a while.

well i had a guy i was working with when i was on work experince last week and i found out, cause i was working at toyota, i found out that somone in the north of tassie has 9 T-18's for sale for $250 and i mean $250 for all 9 of them, and so im sorcing out were this guy lives and im gunna go have a look at them all and see wot condition they are all in, cause 9 of the for 250 is really cheap, and suposuble they all still rejistered, and still run perfectly!!!

I have heard from many places that the T18 was the worst handling car of the 80's, the biggest lemon, etc, etc.
And I know they are nothing great in stock form, but are they really any worse than all other small early 80's cars?? Maybe everyone just saw the styling (or lack thereof) and threw up.

There is no way that the T18 is one of the worst handling cars of the '80s! There are a score of POS that handle worse than the T18 from the same era. Anyone who has driven a Starion, Cordia, EXA or ET pulsar would testify that the T18 shines compared to many cars from that era. Shit, even your RX7 savannah handles like a dangerous bastard compared to the T18. If anything, I find the stock handling setup to be a little on the 'safe' side. True the T18 was negected when the toyota creators were handing out the brakes, but that is easily rectified too. Being a Toyota, there is a host of 2nd hand parts from other toys that will upgrade it.
Lets not forget that the '80's was a period lost to a lot of common sense in a number of ways, for instance, this was the period of time when 'Understeer is safer than oversteer'and other such madness was being hyped by marketing dudes trying to sell FWD cars.
Of course, they only get better when you apply some judicious suspension and steering mods. Like most cars of the era it was certainly flawed in many ways, yet at the same time the T18 offers very cheap thrills because of it's ability to be transformed by relatively inexpensive mods. My pet projets that I will eventually do are to build turbo 3TEU and a tough high compression 3TC.
As far as looks go, once again it's in the eye of the beholder. Lets not forget that less than 10 years ago, sprinters were laughed at by a majority of Jap muscle fans because of their looks and lightweight power output.

I can understand the lack of ridity stuff 100% though, does anyone else find they have cracks were the B pillar 'should' be?
Dropped the box for a clutch change today, didnt look that old but it was definately slipping. Not real worn though! How bad is the standard clutch? The new one is second hand too, but should have more clamping pressure. hopefully. I didnt think our car had enough power to kill the clutch as easily as it did.

Its not so much that it was a lemon, it suffered a really crap marketing scheme, which promised more that was delivered, nothing more
If they were marketed as a car for grannies to do their shopping in, those sorts of articles would say there is more to the T-18 than using it as a shopping trolley (if only a little bit more )

Yeah the book isnt overly serious or all about bad cars, just cars that didnt suceed for various reasons or didnt live up to the hype.
They do rust like buggery though! Im wondering if they were infact italian

Both of our t18's, the parts and bitumen sprints car, both have tracks. The race car is really coping a hammering and definately starting to feel like it, the doors dont really shut well at all, but the hinges have massively sagged!
Clutch in there looked quite new and had definately been replaced in the not too distant past. Must be clamping pressure then. Car only has 40mm sidedrafts, extractors and 2.5" side pipe. I wouldnt think all that would be enough to make it slip, but it does.
I think we will think about a bit of bracing, especially in the rear. No interior concerns to worry about here!

I was hoping to get some ideas from here for what to do to it but they seem to be pretty hard to find other than the few in this thread.
I'd like the engine to have the same mods as you listed Tim, 40mm sidedrafts, extractors and an exhaust system. Maybe a conversion later on.
Suspension I don't really know much about so when I save up a bit I might just go to pedders or somewhere similar and bend over while they charge me out the arse.

Yeah we are probably the masters of dodgy stuff on a budget!
Ours just gets raced at the sprint rounds here, which are 5 x 4 timed laps on a 1.1km go kart track.
Most things sprinter for the suspension work for t18's. We just did the usual brake upgrade of ra60 struts which gives you ventilated fronts. They are more than good enough for what we need. Just with metal king pads it does feel quite overbraked just about, very very easy to lock the fronts if your not careful, that might be related to tire choice though. We won a set of racebrakes pads last time out, but arent bothering to get them for that car just because it doesnt need them. To go with those struts your going to need very early model sigma lower control arms which are one piece, not two piece like the later model which is bolt on ball joint. That combination will give you a nice 3 degrees or so negative camber apparently. We have it on the car, works well.
Get some decent rate low springs from somewhere, try second hand from a sprinter on these forums. To be honest with you we are still using cut stockers! We swapped diffs to the later model t18 diff with the swaybar. I dont know how much difference it makes as it size is pretty average. We did it in the hope of going up to a bigger one later on. Interestingly however, a number of the quickest cars dont run sway bars at all and just rely on stiff springs.
Shocks on ours are stock and horrible all round. Will sort that too eventually.
Diff is still open, might lock the spare diff some time are give that a go.
Engine consists of stock 3tc with all emissions gear gone, 40mm sidedrafts from the 2tg bolted on with a homemade adaptor plate, extractors we bought here secondhand for a 2tg and finished off with 2.5" exhaust with a straight through muffler coming out before the rear wheel for $100.
Tires are 6 year old yokohama street tires the other 1/2 owner had lying around spare for his car.
Anything which had no value and had weight was removed. There isnt much left, but probably another 50kg could still come out of the car.
For comparsion all this work ended up with the t18 being slightly quicker than a few cars including a s14 200sx, mini cooper s (new model, blown), gt4 celica, commodore 5.7l S ute on good rubber, a friends charade turbo, sss pulsar and a few others which I cant remember at the moment.
It would go quicker if we had the money to do some more.
Thats just what we have done for a start anyway.
Keeping the 3tc is debatable, depends what you want. We find it useful because its torque and gives instantaneous torque when you need it, dont need to rev it out for what for spool or similar. Its no gem, but its useful for what we want. Actually sounds really great now too!

What the T-18 really needs for track work is a good roll cage, something better than a 6 point that ties into a few places in the body work for rigidity
If i was to build a T-18, it would probably one with some nice wide wheels, flared guards simmilar to jesses, a good cage, big diff (or IRS conv) w58 and a grunter 4agte or 1uz with "octabodies"
Other thing i would love to do with one is build one up for rally

Yeah its true about the cage. Im not going to spend that much on the car, not really worth it.
For us any turbo motor would be a waste of time, the track is too quick to justify it without awd. The quickest rwd cars are all non-turbo.
Everyone seems to think tires are worth 3 seconds a lap, which on those calculations would bring us down to about 3 seconds behind the lead guys. I would be happy with that anyway, im sure grip will show a number of ridity and suspension inadequacy's though.

its a good daily driver it gets me from A to B so im not fust still runs hard, but atm i have in it a 2T block with a 3TC head on it, still runs good but a little bit of lag compared to befor of course, cause in my 3T block a cam baring shattered, cause it was soo old, witch i didnt think it would do anyway, but it did!! found bits an peices in the sump, but this one will turn out to be a rally car by next year i hope a i will have my other one witch i dont have photos of yet, and im restoring it with a modified 3tc from BRDracing.com, lots of good stuff but i think its exspencive but if i can get the money should be good, but i hope everything im trying to do will turn out well too!!
