strengthening pressure plate Mon, 11 April 2005 09:24 Go to next message
after quoteing a aftermarket 2tg clutch at $500, i decided its not worth buying one, i put up a wanted ad on toymods but nobody had any aftermarket T series clutches.
my clutch plate is fine but my pressure plate is real soft, ive heard of places that strenghten them by welding in new springs/splines...is this expensive? effiective? and where could i get it done?

thanks, jesse

3t-c?
im actually running a 3t-c clutch at the moments, the one i took out of my car was om perfect condition i decided to use it again.

i got told a 3tgte clutch wont work unless it has a 3tgte flywheel too, but anyway im finshed with trying to find a 2nd hand clutch, can you got old clutches strengthened?

How exactly do you want to strengthen it? Clamping pressure or just physically stronger?

You can get different clamping pressures on the pressure plate springs. This is done during assembly. I'm sure a clutch specialist would be able to rebuild to spec, but this would obviously give a heavier pedal.

As for upgrading splines. You'd be limited to something that still fitted your input shaft on the box unless you changed that and thats a whole new can 'o worms.

$500 is a serious ripoff for a heavy duty 200mm clutch. They should be available off the shelf for between $220 & $300 from either daikin (exedy) or RPM. Can you try any other suppliers?

FYI, they are exactly the same clutch kit as the early bluetop 4AGE's in AE82 FWD corollas, except for the throwout bearing.

Cheers
Phil
