Putting baffles in AE86 tank? Mon, 11 April 2005 06:13 Go to next message
Hey guys, Im about to start a 4AGE conversion, and I am just going to take the intank pump from an AE82 Twinky and mount that in the tank, I know this will be ok as long as i dont let it go below 1/4 empty, and with fuel going up this is gonna happen alot! So I am just wondering how to go about installing baffles in my tank, either how to do it or where to get it done?
And am I missing something out, or will that be all I need to do, Just mount the fuel pump, get baffles installed and then I can put the engine in, get it wired and not have surge problems or sharp corners?
How does the baffle work exactly?
I did a search, but could only find info on people using external stuff and surge tanks, and I don't want any of that stuff if I dont have to.
Thanks heaps for any advice.

Rex not so sure one of serge's external tanks will be cheaper/easier...

BREAK IT DOWN!!!! (MC hammer style)

Single pump versus two
Less pipework
No hassle mounting the stoopid thing
Neater
Simpler.

Rex propose doing it like this. Not tested, but give him time, tis how His will be done...

(1) WASH TANK THOROUGHLY AND FILL WITH WATER FOR ANY CUTTING HEATING ETC!!!!!

(2) Cut large (4inch or so) diameter exhaust tube or whatever. only needs to be 70mm tall at max. drill/file plenty of 1/4 inch holes in the bottom.

(3) Mount/Tack pipe into tank so it sits around fuel pump.

Holes should be 'calibrated' so they resist flow away from the but allow satisfactory return, mmmmm juggling.

Rex

internal will be cheaper, lift pumps cost just as much as EFI pumps.

rex, id suggest not drilling holes, as there is a better way to do it. gimmie your email and i'll send you a pic of the perfect internal surge tank design.

im just going to get someone to do mine, cant be bothered with all the welding and exploding petrol tanks myself.

Or you can cut the baffles and pump out of a VN commodore (tank shape very very similar) and weld it in, easy as.

Cheers

i talked to some rally boyz and they suggested something simmilar to what Rex said...but instead of one tube i was told use 2 tubes....one just larger then the pick up and one slightly bigger then that....

the smaller one is to have holes mostly around the top while the outside one holes around to bottom....or the other way around...i cant really remember

but basically its easy to research...get a large container with solid bottom and test it out

cheers Adam

please excuse the following in that picture:

stupid font

stupid terminology

shit drawing

i think the spiral is the way to go, it doesnt really have to be any more "spirally" than that, and you only have to weld 2 sections.

just imagine it on an angle, you should see how in theory the fuel can't run out.

"true dat!!"

anything less than a quarter of a tank, and my jdm tank still gives me surge...and pretty bad. especially whilst drifting...and it usually happens mid-drift too(gives new meaning to the phrase 'tank slapper')

so, at the moment, it's keep plenty of fuel in there, and live with it, until i find the time to 'modificationise' my tank

cheers

follow rex's instructions

then
buy some fuel foam, put this around the pump area (but not in direct contact with pump.

and enjoy surge free motoring/drifting Wink

I heard foam only lasts a few years.
In theory sounds good though. Can anyone confirm about how long it lasts?

its not normal foam... the price reflects this./ its deasigned for fuel useage in mind and will not break down.

Revo racegear sell it.

Hmm yeah but even the speciality fuel foam I heard has a relatively short life span.. Maybe i've been fed bullshit though.
