ae86 heater core replacement Wed, 13 April 2005 03:07 Go to next message
Anyone replaced a heater core in an ae86.

So you have to remove the whole dash, or just the logicon/air control + surrounds.

This is all that stands between my car and a roadworthy hahaha

any advice will be great.

why not just not use it for your roadworthyness..

join both hoses in the engine bay.

I wish it was that easy, but the core in the inside is old and rusted. So i got to replace the whole core. I've got the parts already.

Getting a roadworthy, u need a heater for demisters.

I've been using RAIN X and it works a treat, but I don't think vicroads is going to like it.

I doubt they'd actually check if your heater works.

Changing a heater core is a bitch. Glovebox out and the support across the bottom. Entire centre console out, including the pressed supports. Aircon evaporator out. Heater box out (remove hoses from engine bay side before doing this.... derr). Heater core out.

I'll repeat, it's a bitch, plus there are some screws that are hard to find.

Good luck
Hen

ahh.. shit....

I could bring it to the mechanics , but they'll charge me heaps for a job that I can probably do myself.

easy job
just time consuming
can be done in udner an hour

gotta remove pretty much everything under the dash

like henn said
glovebox out, metal brackets, din surround, fan/heater controls
trim in drivers side well

just do it yourself and get a ice cream container to put all the screws

couple of pics might help you...

it makes things a bit easier, but you don't need to pull the whole dash. glovebox, plastics, etc all out;

http://www.apex.net.au/~danorms/dash3.JPG

evaporator and pressed metal supports (as descibed by Henn) of the centre console out. the heater box is on the right in this pic;

http://www.apex.net.au/~danorms/oldblwrhb.JPG

please excuse the mess Very Happy you can see that it is positioned directly behind the centre of the dash, a couple of inches behind the heater controls.

a bit of a bastard, but definitely something you can do yourself...

you could give your whole HVAC system a refresh, if you're that sort of person... Smile

hope this helps you a bit.

my apologies... didn't think about that element of the picture.

a lot of that had been added by previous owners... when you pull it apart, yours will hopefully look a lot more like my own "after" picture;

thanks, Shcao... i like my dash, too. Smile

it was mostly speaker wire. all you should find under there that you will have to undo will be a few plugs, for the power to the blower, sensor in the A/C and other bits. can't remember how many off the top of my head... maybe 4 or 5 plugs, all up, and all unique to each other.

you could easily pull the blower box out at the same time and give them all a bit of a cleanout. lots of grime and debris can collect in these after a few years.

I reckon it was a delorium.

All that wiring was for the navigation, and fuel management for the flux capicitor.

Hey!

To make mine roadworthy, I'm using 12v electric demistors... Just small units to screw into the dash where the vents are. Might be worhwhile for you as you can just throw the whole heater core out?
