race engines Fri, 05 July 2002 06:53 Go to next message
would anyone in Brissy like to come over and dismantle a couple of 3S , ex race engines??.
For those who have previously offered to help our race car program before, I should be needing a hand in say 3 weeks to put the new race engine back into the MR2. Any takers pls advise. Our race sprinter is just about ready to go again.

hey ya Terry.
Sorry I won't be able to help you. I'm am pretty busy every weekend. I've had a bit of experiance with a few 3S's at work.
I know a fair bit about toyota eninges so I'm looking into changing my appreniceship into specialising in toyota's.
Maybe you would like to help me one time put a 1G-GTE into my soon to be street/track TA23.
I also plan to mod a 2TG into a hybrid 3TG, do you know anything about doing this???
Anyway good luck with it all, if I do get free one weekend I'll let you know.
Benny

Sorry benny, I've never done this conversion and can't offer advice. However, if you want info on allowable mods for track work, I'll gladly offer help. Basically, if you want to race it, you have to stick with a strict set of rules. If all you want to do is the occassional drag or sat arvo sprint at QR, its open slather provided its safe to go on the track. With a 6 cyl conversion, you will need better brakes and diff before any scrutineer lets you near any sort of track. Terry

Hey Terry, I may be interested in helping out!
I'll be putting one of these engines in my ta22 in the future so it would be a good learning experience!
Is there a train station near you at all? As i'm not allowed to drive for a little while!

Hey.

I've spent the last ten years playing with toyota's so I could offer some sort of help, if not technical, then labour Smile

I'm up for adding any engine conversion, or informative excercise and information gathering to my list of stuff done Smile

email me when you are pulling the engines down, i'd love to participate, or spectate Smile

I live in Chapell Hill, not to far too.

hey benny the mod is pretty straight forward, you will need to make clearance in the block, put the crank in and spin it then you will see where you need to grind.

thanks guys, the TA23 1GGTE project is under the covers for a little while at the moment (literaly).
I am really concertrating on geting my hybrid 3t-G
running, I've got my 2tg head back yesterday and am taking my block to get cleaned up and bored out today, but one problem I've just found is I wasn't given the dummy cam key to lock the gears in place. I'll speak the the workshop about it this arvo anyway.
thanks again

Hey Terry,

My bro lives near you man.

When are you dismantling the engines, I may be able to come and help,

I have a 1600 that is with the ta23 i am buying but it is like dead, the guy tells me it is not worth even takin it.

Do you know how much power you can get out of one of them if it is pretty heavily worked? It is the single cam version i think.

thanx fella., i work from home so time is not always a problem, but week-ends are always best. Plenty goin on this week-end so let me know please. My wife and daughter both race & fix their own cars, so no problems there Cool1 , thanks.

CelicaLuva, The 1600 4AC single cam engine is not the best to start a hot-up project with. the twin cam 4AG is so cheap and readily avail, and has better quality internals. Its worth taking the 4AC for a few bits. I would guess 85-90kw would be a real stretch, but I've never done a race 4AC so I'm only guessing. A base spec 4AG is 85kw stock. With little work you get 110kw. the jap 20v version is nearly 125kw. As usual, you only get what you pay for. Why not a 3S engine??

Yeah I will consider prolly almost anything, but I do like efi economy and power.

What are the specs on the 3S they are one engine I do not know much about, are they the 2L one or the 1.8L what are better, do ya reckon?

Re: race engines Sun, 10 November 2002 21:00 Go to previous messageGo to next message
the 3S is the 2litre engine built as the big brother to 4A. fitted to lots of models in various turbo and NA forms. As usual, Oz cars got the cheapest versions. generally relatively high torque, good quality engine. you choices are endless really for the celica--simply comes down to budget!. I have a 3s sititng in a AE86 chassis at present--come and look

I anyone able to come over next week-end??. 2 engines to tear down while I put the new race wheels & brakes on the sprinter.
