n00bie question Tue, 26 April 2005 10:51 Go to next message
Hi guys I just got my license and it got me interested in cars.
i think driving is really really fun but i dont know too much about it. i know you guys know lots so i was wondering if someone could explain the bits of suspension to me?

like i know what shock absorbers do but ive never actually seen any, the same with spring

umm.. i dont know what 'arms' are and ive heard of bushes been talked about alot and what's a 'welded' diff?

I've done a search through google on the toymods site but people have been talking about the kinds of setup, not explaining what the parts are.

thanks alot guys and girls!

howstuffworks is the best site you can start off at. follow this up with getting the manual for your car and getting down an dirty with it (in a non-erotic way, or whatever floats your boat)

then ask questions based on your observations and research Smile

howstuffworks.com is an awesome site to start off on. But there's no better experience than getting your hands dirty. I learnt most about my rolla when i stripped it out, installed audio, central locking etc

Same thing with the engine, pull it out if you have the room and equipment. Also, pages like Bill Sherwood and some others... Very Happy

I'll take the "welded Diff" question"

Also known as "a locker," "Full Spool," or "CIG Special" it removes the "Defferential" system from the drive line as the unit can no longer "differentiate" torque. Thus it is no longer a differntial but rather a spool where eash wheel recieves 50% of the engines torque. Locked Diff's (spools) are great for racing, drifing and terrible for day to day driving because they "Scrub" tyres very quickly, and cause cars to tend to understeer.

This is a conventional Front McPherson Strut. The rear system is slightly different as it has trailing arms and not stearing assembly. Also there are small variations.

Cheers
Jordan
