check your earths and clean your connections.
with welding cable you should not be loosing >3v from battery to starter
sure battery is OK?

I had this problem when I put my battery in the boot.
I now have 2 4guage earths from the battery to the chassis, and 2 4gauge earths from the block to the chassis and all is fine.
Just add an extra earth.
If you feel rich, add an earth from the battery to the block if you can.
Thats the best way of doing it.

Theres a couple of things that could be it, try checking the battery with a load tester and stuff to make sure its still in good condition.
Another thing could be your alternator...could be getting old and tired.
And the final thing which is not too often to occur could be that the belt could be loose, make sure it is tight, this happen to my friend once, he tightend it and BAM worked AOK.

crUZida i just replace my earth from the chassis to the block with a bigger lead and bigger lugs and seems to have fixed the problem but may be temporary. it still has voltage drop but not quite as much and will still start after about 3 seconds...how much voltage drop is normal?
Seth187 it was checked with load tester and yes it is in good condition..it could be the alternator im not sure but i did tighten the belt not long ago..maybe it is isnt tight enough i dont know
thanks for all your help guys

are you getting 9 volts while cranking, or 9 volts whenever you put a meter on the terminal?
charging system voltage will drop during cranking (hence the ECU/ignition system taking power from multiple spots so it doesn't reset during starting)
is the solenoid on the starter OK? if it's old and the contacts are starting to arc over instead of make solid contact, the starter will pull more current than usual, making the whole system worse.

I'm pretty sure mine doesn't drop below 11volts on cranking.
And thats turning over 8cyls @ 10:1 c/r

thechuckster i am getting 9 volts while cranking..just reading off my ecu handset when the ignition is just on and not cranking i get 12 volts or thereabouts.
i have bin told the starter is fine but i really cant tell. if anything it is actually slower then normal if comparing to say a new car.
