gear knob conversion Wed, 27 April 2005 12:07 Go to next message
just read the 'gearknob conversion' article on this site and had a bit of a chuckle.

although i shouldn't have.

you see, i tried to swap my gearknob for the shiny sexy number.. and failed.. (yes i know that's something most people wouldn't admit to)

after applying enough force twisting the gearknob that i thought i was going to start bending the shifter, i decided it must be held on with bolts that i just can't see yet. so i proceeded to chop up it's leather skin to find.. no bolts..

back to the violent twisting.. perhaps a bigger tool, a longer handle can help me out.. no luck.

from what i can see it looks like a leatherbound (see: vinyl) piece of plastic glued to the gearstick. no thread, no bolts.. just plastic and glue. for the life of me i don't understand how glue could bond so strongly between plastic and metal.. perhaps this can only occur over the course of 30 years cure time.

i could of course simply cut the thing at the shaft, as close to the knob as possible (this may even give a cool short-shifter look) but i really don't want to *have* to do that.

if anyones had any experience swearing at their ra23 gearknob i'd be interested in hearing how you overthrew it (should you have had similar troubles).

Could be on with loctite.
Grab a pair of multigrips or vicegrips and use them.

If its fucked pull the gear leaver out of the box only takes 5 Min's and sit in it a vice. Get a pair of vice grips or stilsons and turn anti clockwise. Never had this trouble before mine always just come loose on there own accord always tightening it up.
