why do a superstrut brake conversion Thu, 28 April 2005 12:33 Go to next message
Hi,

why would you buy ae101 275mm disc rotor when you have to mill it down to around 260mm?
Just keep the std GTI 258mm disc rotor and fit the twin piston calipers. I know the ae101 is thicker but the GTi disc will also have less rolling mass.

I thought that the GTI disk's were 248mm not 258, giving you a 12mm bigger diameter, and I thought that the series 1 SX had smaller disks again at around 240mm.

better calipers, thicker discs.

brakes convert kinetic energy into heat via friction.

TWO BIG THINGS TO CONSIDER
1. friction co-efficient. More friction = more movement turned into heat
2. Heat sinking ability. Buy being thicker, the disc can absorb MORE HEAT and cool down enough to enable MORE FRICTION to be applied to it before it fails to be able to take any more.

Your question is answered.

One problem is balancing after cutting down the disc.

Not sure about the GTI diameter, i was going by the article on twincam.org. I have a late model GTI and will measure them on the weeekend. I agree with the heat transfer. I am saying that due to the hassel it possibly easier to just add the twin piston calipers and not bother with the extra 3mm thickness. Espicially on a street car.
