How to set timing on 4AGTE with coil packs? Wed, 04 May 2005 04:15 Go to next message
hi guys

haven't seen this one really covered, but i just had the NRMA come round to check out my car

recently my 4agte celica has started pinging, until the other day it started to backfire and hesiate at low gear, and eventually all gears.

It is definately timing, but i am unsure of how to set it without a distributor.

anyone can give me a step by step?

it's a series 2 4AGZE. coilpacks, crank angle sensor, AFM

thanks

from memory you can change the base timing by adjusting the crank angle sensor.

how do i adjust it that way?

would it be the same as a TPS? just unscrew and rotate the gear?

Its just like rotating a dizzy

the CAS is practically the bottom half of a dizzy with a cap on it, just loosen the bolts that hold the CAS in and twist as u would a dizzy

there will be a little box that says diagnostic or something like that, and you need to bridge T1 and E1 (diagram under the cap) with a paper clip, or little bit of wire..which will disable the advance/retard on the timing..thus letting you adjust the base timing..books suggest 10deg..but you can get up to 12-13deg befor you have any dramas..

on my aw11 mr2, its on the back firewall, its about 1.5cm by 2.5 cm rectangle little box that says diagnostic on it. I have no idea where it would be in your car.

i wouldnt go twisting it willy nilly and driving it, i would get a timming light, and actually know what your doing. Failing that, take it to a mechanic that can do it for you.

Buy a timing light.
Clip the red clip on the positive battery terminal.
Clip the black clip on the negative battery terminal.
Clamp the other do-hicky onto number one plug lead.

You want the diagnostic port in the engine bay. A diagram of the pins will be inside underneath its lid.
Bridge T1 and E1 with a wire.

Start engine.
Point flashing light at timing marks on timing chain/belt cover, just above crankshaft.
Watch for notch in crankshaft to come whizzing past and show you where the timing is currently.

Loosen the CAS, rotate it slowly until you get the timing set at the 10 degree mark (BTDC). Don't worry about advancing it, the factory manual says 10 degrees, leave it there.

Pull the bridging wire, test that the spark advance system works by revving the motor and watching the timing.

Don't trial and error this.
