Big T's AE86 Trueno: Turbo Conversion (edit: pics up) Sun, 01 May 2005 14:49 Go to next message
Hey all. Got a little bored so i decided to write about my conversion. For those that don't know, i bought "ILLUZN's" Trueno Coupe back in September with the plan to take it track drifting. However, work kinda bitched me hard and i couldn't make the time to see it through. The car is still running but out of rego at the moment. The car mods list is as follows:

ENGINE:
factory 4AGE
Apexi pod Filter
RS*r extractors, front pipe and full exhaust into cannon muffler
TRD spark leads
Cusco Brake Booster Stopper.

HANDLING:
Cusco Strut Brace
Cusco Coilovers with Camber Tops front
TRD 8way adjustable Rear shocks with lowered springs (unknown)
15x6.5 (+18 offset) Black Racing Rims

DRIVE TRAIN:
TRD 2 way LSD
heavy Duty clutch (unknown)

BRAKES:
factory vented front with EBC brake pads
Rear Discs with bendix pads

INTERIOR:
Air Con
Bride Zeta Drivers Seat
Bride Brix Passenger Seat
Nardi Steering Wheel
TRD leather gear knob
Tinted Windows
Willans 4 point harness Drivers side (Passenger not fitted)

EXTRAS:
Viper Alarm.
Central locking
CD player including front 4" alpine 3way in factory spots, Carozerra (pioneer) 6" 3 way rear speakers

Pics of the car:
http://img101.echo.cx/img101/6372/truenoextfr3pe.th.jpg
http://img101.echo.cx/img101/7205/truenopassengerext2es.th.jpg
http://img87.echo.cx/img87/7042/truenoextrr7kx.th.jpg

While browsing the forums and researching the techs, i came across a turbo kit i just couldn't resist bidding on. And thanks to "THE WITZL" and PMP-80Y's turbo, the track drifting will have to wait for the 4agTe conversion.

The plan for the turbo conversion (the stuff in bold are the things i already have)

Redtop Smallport bottom end
GZE pistons 8.9:1 comp ratio
Genuine Toyota piston rings
Bigport Head
Rebuild engine with ACL Bearings
ARP Head Studs
ARP Conrod Bolts
ARP Flywheel Bolts
Fidanza Adjustable Cam Gears
TRD 272 degree, 7.5mm lift Camshafts
TRD Valve Springs
HKS 1.6mm Head Gasket

Autronic SM4
255L/h Walbro Internal Fuel Pump
AE92 Oil Cooler Setup
RB25DET BB turbo on homemade manifold
3" dump pipe
Aristo 2JZGTE intercooler

Custom 3" exhaust
New front brake setup; RX7 Series 6 4 pots on MASSIVE disks.
New rear brake setup; Suggestions please!!! Currently have JDM solid disks.
w55 box on dellow bellhousing
215mm 4age flywheel with custom 4 puck clutch
7MGTE injectors

The injectors:
http://img101.echo.cx/img101/7082/parts0290ng.th.jpg

That's the plan for the moment but working 7 days a week doesn't help the progress much. I'm getting my cousin who's a mechanic at Subaru to help me out. Hopefully they won't notice the extra Toyota engine sitting in their workshop!! Razz Anyways, that's all for now. I'll update as I go, which will probably be extremely slowly Laughing If anyone has any suggestions or things to add, by all means do so. Thanks for reading guys!

Eddie.

Yep thats me Smile I actually think the car is turning out a little more beastly than i originally intended. I would've been happy with about 140-150kw@w but now it looks like i might be pushing the limit of the turbo i have!!

I'm roughly estimating it'll make about 170-180 atw once it's all finished. Where abouts in the rev range it'll make it though is a different story Razz

The 272 degree cams were just an impulse buy Laughing . I just saw them and went "OOOOOHHH genuine TRD cams!! Gotta have em!!! (even if they're lumpier than what i needed)"

I'm sure that with the autronic i'll be able to make the car very drivable though. Just have to wait and see.

Eddie.

Edit: pics of the cams Very Happy

how much psi you plan on running? also do you know what the spring rates were on your car when you bought it, felt like a perfect suspension setup for street, tight but not too tight. 272 degree cams + forced induction....mmmmm sounds tasty.

Plan on a absolute MAX of 15psi with the current turbo due to the ceramic turbine. I honestly don't think i'll need any more than this.

As for the springs, i don't actually know the rates but i know the TRD shocks are on the hardest settings. Once i start ripping the engine out, i might pull the diff out for a clean and work out the spring rates.

Also just got back from picking up my TRD valve spring set Very Happy

Eddie.

Don't worry Des, you'll see it soon enough! Haven't been driving the Trueno around... the rego ran out in Feb. What kind of gear you running in your car Des?

I looked at your thread but couldn't find the specs. How much did it cost you all up? Pm it if you like or if you don't want to say that's cool. What ecu are you using to run it?

I know this is getting slightly off topic, but i'm in the next suburb to you Des (in Cherrybrook). My friend lives kinda near you and i always drive via your house (my friend somehow knows which house you live in - no idea how!) to see if your car is ever sitting in the driveway (it never has been).

Decided to add a pair of Fidanza cam gears to my list. They arrived today along with the walbro internal fuel pump thanks to John at Importbitz.

Very easy guy to deal with and awesome service. I only deposited the cash yesterday and the goods are already here. I'll be getting my rx7 brake calipers off him as well when they come in.

Eddie.

And lastly, a new timing belt. Could have just re-used the old one with the non-interference head and all but this was only $40.

I'll be picking up the engine tommorrow so hopefully things will get started soon!

Update!

Picked up the engine today and dropped it off at my cousins work. We managed to strip it down to the block in about an hour or so. Just need to get the crank/pistons out and see what size bearings i'll need to order.

Also ordered my GZE pistons and rings from Penrith Toyota. $560 for the lot Very Happy They should be here in 3 weeks. Hopefully by that time we'll have the crank out and i'll get the flywheel off the trueno to have it all balanced up.

Sorry there's no pics but forgot to take the digicam with me when i went for the engine.

Picked up a few goodies today Very Happy

GZE Pistons + rings

HKS 1.6mm Metal Head Gasket

AND TRD radiator and Oil filler caps
http://img258.echo.cx/img258/6543/parts0061ri.th.jpg

Unfortunately, I won't have any time to get ripping the head off my current engine due to other commitments Sad So I've decided to put the conversion on hold for a little bit until things smooth out. I should get round to getting the box/engine out in around a month or 2.

Besides, I'll need the time to save up for the Autronic so it doesn't work out too bad. Until the next update then!

Update!!

Well I've gathered some more parts, namely:

2 core radiator
350z brake master/booster
Willwood brake bias adjuster
Bare bigport head (to save me taking my engine out)

I bought this stuff from IRA11Y. I would've bought some more from him but i ran outta cash Razz But don't worry... i'm going back for another run Very Happy

I've also now got: Water/oil temp, oil pressure, boost gauges and a 3.75" tacho with shift light.

Picked up my ARP Headstuds and rod bolts too. Still waiting on the flywheel bolts though.

I've also ordered a pair of RX7 series 6 calipers Shocked meaning i'll be fitting a MASSIVE 30mm thick disk in there. Haven't yet decided on the diametre...i'll wait till i get some new wheels so i can make sure they'll fit.

I'll take some pics when i get the chance but i can't be farked right now.

On other notes, after talking with my engine builder, I've decided NOT to use the TRD bearings as it's ALOT of hassle trying to get the proper clearances and tolerances. I'll be going with ACL bearings instead.
I have decided to port/polish the head and valve grind and polish/shot peen/grind the rods. I've also decided on going for a slight overbore with the block.
The block/crank/rods/head are currently being chemically cleaned up at the workshop.

Hopefully i'll be getting a w58 box combo soon so i can get the flywheel and balance up the engine internals.

That's about it for now. It all seems to be coming along a bit quicker than i expected but i'm not complaining Very Happy although my wallet seems to be wailing a bit Sad

Oh and there's been a little change in the gearbox combo i'll be getting. Looks like I'm getting a W55 box with dellow bellhousing. It'll be hooked up with the 215mm flywheel I never knew I had with a custom clutch.

Eddie.

As far as i know, the big/smallport block threads are identical. Either way, ARP only make ONE 4age head stud kit so that's the one i got. I don't know the thread pitch but i'll measure you up the thread lengths as soon as i finish eating Very Happy

Nice one mate!

Thanks fo ryour help.

A part # will be nice so i can also look the details of them up and go from there.

Reason I ask is I want to get some that are longer and fit a spacer up in the head so i can get even more clamp force more evenly.

Thanks so far Eddie

I picked these up today Smile

http://img64.echo.cx/img64/2038/clutch0069mq.th.jpg

Mmmmm. 4 puck, brass button sprung centre clutch disk with a 1550lbs rated pressure plate to suit 212mm 4age flywheel mated to a w5* box.

I was originally planning on getting a 5 puck but the 4 puck was available off the shelf from Exedy and was a bit cheaper. If anyone's planning the clutch upgrade as well, i found that calling Exedy directly is the best way to get it done. They'll get you part numbers then refer you to a local distributor.

NPC in qld are also a good option. They were willing to make me a custom 5 puck button disk with a custom 1700lbs pressure plate and have it ready for me by Tuesday. The price was slightly dearer but it would've been all custom made. That and i actually needed the pressure plate ON Tues early in the morning so i couldn't afford to wait for the post. I'll probably order my next clutch off them when i have the luxury of time.

Let us know how you go with that clutch, since its such a popular topic for 4AGTE's Smile

I've got the same exedy pressure & clutch plate package, but for the slightly smaller 200mm flywheel, and it slips like a bitch on hard gearchanges Crying or Very Sad I hope you have better luck. It grabbed really hard for the first 1000km, then I don't know what happened.

Thanks mate. I'll let you know how the clutch is once it's all together. I've realised I'm gonna have soooo much stuff to run in with this car from scratch.

I'll need to run in the new brakes, new pistons, new cams, new clutch, new ecu. So i'll have to keep flipping the revs to bed the rings but not too high for the sake of the cams while braking lightly to wear in the pads and bed in the clutch on the gear changes!!! At least the autronic has the autotune feature so i shouldn't have to worry too much about that.

That clutch setup that Eddie has ordered is exactly the same setup as what I have just acquired for my 4agte, except that I'm running the slightly bigger 230mm 4agze flywheel, so the clutch is to suit that. I'm not expecting my clutch to fail once it's in, it's a beefy setup, and I think the 4agte will treat it just fine. The guy I got my clutch off has been in the industry for more than 30 years, he knows his stuff so well it's not funny, so yeah I trust him when he says that it will hold up fine lol. Very Happy

There's a pretty big difference between a 200 and a 230mm disk though... it's a full 15% greater surface area to grip to.

I went for the compromise... didn't want to grind out the dellow bellhousing too far but wanted the maximum disk size i could get. Then i realised i had a 212 flywheel attached to the redtop i bought so that became the obvious choice.

One of my headlights were out so i decided to replace them with a couple new raybrig bulbs i got off Garth.

Wound up the lights and what do i find?

http://img323.echo.cx/img323/1362/raybrigs0027lv.th.jpg

That's right... bling bling Garth-spec Raybrig clear lenses Very Happy

Had a little trouble getting the lenses out seeing as the screws had rusted themselves in so i took the metal sub-frame out with it.

Turns out the bulbs were fine but one of my plugs was all burnt and charred causing the light to not work. I'll have to grab a replacement plug and cut and re-solder it on.

On another downside... i also noticed that the passenger side head-light assembly was starting to rust. The area is actually quite large but it seems to only be surface rust and located soley on the light assembly (it's a replacement one).
I just temporarily hit it with some wd40. I'll take the whole thing out next week and rust treat it properly then seeing as i'll have the whole week off work next week Very Happy

Eddie.

Since i had the day off Very Happy i decided to get at that headlight and fix it up properly.

AHHHH my eye!!!

As you can see, the rust was actually pretty bad on the light.

Here's a close up of the worst bit. It's gone all the way through Sad
http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/3338/fixlight0031yf.th.jpg

These 3 dudes helped out heaps with the repairs.
http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/8443/fixlight0043jo.th.jpg

ALOT of the little bolts and screws were rusted pretty badly. Lucky i'd gone to pickies earlier and replaced them with relatively new ones.
http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/7286/fixlight0052rp.th.jpg

After a fresh coat of paint, she was good to go.
http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/6458/fixlight0064sq.th.jpg

I also decided to sand/paint the inside of the top light cover as there was the tiniest bit of surface rust on the edges. I already had everything diassembled so why the hell not?
http://img310.imageshack.us/img310/4769/fixlight0078sc.th.jpg

Now all that needs to be done is re-wiring that blown plug. I'll have to borrow a soldering iron off a mate before i can get started on that one yet.

Well, i figured it was time for an update. There won't be any pics in this one though since my camera decided to shit itself and i haven't got it back from repairs yet Mad

The engine is basically complete. There was an extremely frustrating moment when we were just about to torque the head to the block. I had a set of ARP headstuds for the job and when we got round to lubing them up and putting the nuts on... we found that one of the nuts had no thread!! So i had to wait a week before i could head into rocket to get a swap.

Other than that, it's all good. Just need to whack on stuff like the water pump and manifolds and it'll be ready.

I should also be getting a Davies Craig 14" thermo fan in the mail soonish and also my MASSIVE 32mm thick brake rotors. From there, it'll be out with the current engine, removing the struts to take to the brake place and taking measurements for the new w55 and tailshaft.

Another thing i've found is that the IC piping i got from teh Witzl is actually going to interfere with the pop-up light motors so i'm looking at an entirely new IC setup. I'm not sure whether to go a dodgy and get one of those ebay coolers for $200 or whether to get a brand name one. Still undecided as of yet.
