An 18R-C will fit with a bit of fiddling, but this would actually be a step backwards from the 21R-C (and that's saying something). They're not even crossflow!
Also, it won't be legal because the engine is older than the car.

I was having a chat to someone about this the other day.
Apparently its legal as long as the motor you are putting in exceeds the emmisions of the year of your car.
ie, a 1994 1uz would probably be legal in a 1998 car.

22r ?
you don't have many options.
Alot of things need to be engineered
even simple mods like new wheels.

really? i thought it was a better engine or am i thinking of the 18rg?
but yeh the problem with the 21rc thats in it is that my mechanic said theres about $3k worth of oil leaks and thars some rather large dents in the sump(wether thats bad or not?) and i really doubt this thing is gunna pass rego again unless i get the oil leaks fixed up but id be better off just gettin a new car although i love my celica and id rather just get a new engine

So just buy another 21R-C that doesn't leak oil. There's no point going to the trouble and expense of an engine conversion unless you're chasing significant power gains.

why not stick it up on a hoist, give it a good degrease and steam-clean to get rid of all the existing oil and shit... then go over all the bolted up stuff like sump and timing cover, etc and re-tighten the nuts and fix the leaks - then see which seals are still leaking and if they're easy to get to, replace them - then get it inspected while it's clean
don't waste your $ on another boat anchor - get a proper engine for it
