Funny noise in my AE86...help?

hey guys, as said i own a AE86 sprinter, the engine is pretty nackered but anyway....
i was driving down to the shops the other night, and i was on a straight in Fourth gear, at around 2500 RPM and suddenly, i heard this rough grinding, shuddering, kind of sound from the rear of the car. I am gonna go down and check the oil in the diff today, but i was wondering if any one has had a similar problem or could help me ? i also thought that maybe it could be a slightly bent tailshaft...but i need help! does anyone know what is up with my car?

btw bent tailshaft would be a severe vibration rather than a grinding noise.

i will take it to a mechanic if i cant figure out what it is, but if i can, why should i ?

AE86 told to straighten up and reminded it's not a comedian. 
Sorry reminded me of that list of complaints about planes from pilots.
"Noise like midget hitting something with hammer behind instrument panel"
Fix "Removed hammer and midget from begind instrument panel"
