intercooler quandry??? Sat, 07 May 2005 08:53 Go to next message
now the majority (80%) of intercoolers are mounted with the intercooler pipes entering the bottom, ie...

http://www.cbsomagh.org/AVCE/WebSites2003/AGormley/evo-intercooler.JPG

and then you see a few like this....

http://www.markl.f9.co.uk/crx-si/turbo/fitting/intercooler/intercooler7.jpg

and then you see the odd one that looks like this.....

http://www.mazdarotary.net/images/tech_pics/intercooler.jpg

so the question is, is there a reason you see the majority of intercoolers mounted as is display number one....theory tells me that hot air rises there for the coolest place is the bottom of the intercooler (hence so many are mounted like number one)....so looking for peoples input on mounting their intercoolers as the second picture vs the first, pros cons etc....

the end tanks are designed so the air flows through the whole core

some are mounted with endtank at the top because thats the only way theyll fit on the car and other vice versa. has nothing to do with hot air rising

also
some have inlet/outlets on the same size to minimise cooler pipe lengths

but wouldnt there be differences, maybe not noticeable, in cooling capacity.
...because the cooler with tanks on the short side has the air running travelling a longer distance through the core, than in a cooler with end tanks on the longer side.

STR8 2.8: Longer path for air to pass through means better cooling but more restriction (pressure drop)

Shorter path for air to go through means less cooling but less restriction. So its a tradeoff.

But in my opinion end tanks and outlets should be designed to suit the car so the pipework is as short and easy to route as possible. Eg I run inlet/outlet on the same side of the cooler (see pic #3) since on a 4AGZE the SC outlet and inlet manifold are on the same side of the engine.

- some end tanks are designed so. Just because they are tapered and look to be right doesn't mean the they are going to flow evenly across the whole core.
To achieve equal flow across the core, one needs to consider that the front to back as well as top to bottom needs to be equalised.
In the case of most intercoolers where they enter at the same side (as in case 3) or both top or both bottom, then there will be a tendency to favour the most direct air path (air will naturally follow the path of least resistance).

No, cooling capacity is a measure of the surface area (both internal and external) of the intercooler. All else being equal, a short path intercooler (#3) can cool as much as as longer path intercooler as long as the external/internal suface area is the same (ie if they are the same brand and measure 300 x 600).
The short path cooler achieves equivalent cooling by slower airspeed through tubes, but (as henn pointed out) the available area for the air to flow through is greater and therefore can potentially flow more.

The easiest path to equal flow is to have entry and exit at opposing corners.

so anyways ive got an intercooler that appears like it is "meant" to be mounted as the first pic is.....will there be a great loss in cooling ability if i mount it like the second pic?

mount it however it fits best in the car with relation to piepwork and also keeping in mind how its going to get the best airflow though the front bar.

as said above, but try to keep piping length to a minimum. (increases throttle response, decreases lag and gives less area for heat soak)

id imagine having it upside down (pipes down the bottom) would also kinda protect the cooler against road rash?
