3VZ-FE misfire Sun, 08 May 2005 13:40 Go to next message
My fathers vienta has had a misfire problem for ages now, and no one has had any luck fixing the problem. Sometimes when something is changed it will temporarily cure the problem, but it always comes back. The misfireis totally intermittent and certainly not just one cylinder. Sometime it will be fine for a whole drive, others it will miss on and off the whole way. It's currently bad enough that it's almost undriveable. Spark plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor have all been changed.

It was at the local toyota dealer last week; they swapped the ecu between it and another vienta. Each ran fine with the others ecu, so they swapped them back, still ran fine. They test drove it for 30min, fine. I took it home, had to overtake, 80-130 foot to the floor, ran fine for the next few min, then has missed very badly since.

Any ideas? Anyone have a wiring diagram?
Where does the tacho get its signal from, the ECU or at the coil/igniter? That might be a bit of a clue seeing as the tacho does drop when it's missing.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

Nope....but the problem wouldn't be intermittent if it was dirty injectors.

Probably not, but its worth a try since you have tried most other things.

Otherwise give it to an auto sparky place who look like they can work on Toyota's.

Well....just got a call from toyota. Turns out the spark plugs in the rear bank of cylinders were fouled, due to a leaking head gasket. No surprise considering the front HG has gone previously.

Seeing as they'll charge an arm and a leg to change it, we'll just get them to throw in some new plugs which should tide us over for a while, then when time permits I'll do the head gasket myself.
