Ignition Problems :(

Hi Guys,
Having a problem with an ST185 where the car has a great deal of trouble starting when cold. You insert the key, turn it, and nothing..... no engine turn, no noise, nothing at all. Almost like the battery was disconnected all togther. If you keep trying it eventually starts, however it's getting worse now (taking longer before it starts). Battery is ok, lights turn on fine when engine is off. I was thinking there may be a loose wire behind the barrel, but if anyone has any ideas given the symptoms describes I'd appreciate it.

Your ignition switch is just probably on its way out. Whats happening there is too much resistance between the wiper contacts which isn't allowing enough current flow to fully engage the solenoid.
You can easily test this by putting a volt meter on the start solenoid and measuring the voltage when the key is being turned onto "start".
If the voltage drops too much your best bet would be to replace the ignition switch. This isn't as hard as it sounds as its only the switch section and not the complete ignition barrel like some people think

Hmmm, that could be my problem too.
Every now and then I turn the key, and I just get a click.
I pop the car in 4th, rock it to move the flywheel teeth, and then it starts.
Its been getting must worse lately.
Thoughts Cool1?

You could do the same check as above but its strange that rocking the car back and forward gets it to start.
In your case it could actually be the contact in the starter thats not allowing current flow to the motor.
I am about to start fitting new start switches in a batch of rally cars because they have all be having the same problems lately. And the problems are the old ignition switches passing the use by date.

this is most likely solenoid attached to starter motor - and that starter motor is starting gradual decline in performance as well.

If it is the starter it will just be the contact like I said. They are easy to rebuild so dont stress too much.

Cool1.
Do you know if the st184 barrel + switch will suit the st185? Or even st184 ig switch with st185 barrel?

Mate I really couldn't tell you. I know the switches themselves look pretty much the same in all newer Toyota's, its just the plug that is visibly different.
Your best bet would be to ring Toyota and get a new part.
