What is a good $20,000 car for a female? Tue, 17 May 2005 02:13 Go to next message
Hi everyone.

A friend is in the market for a new car. She is 34 and has 2 kids and wnats something "cool". She has about $20,000ish to spend and doesn't mind if it is a 2 door.

What are some good cars around this price?

well, that rules out 2-seaters I guess. Does she care if it's a grey import? does she want something sporty (like a celica), something luxo-bargy (like a crown/soarer), something family sensible (camry/cressy), performance (supra), hot hatch?

Why?

I'm not the biggest commodore fan, but VT's are very nice. Would have a lot of money left from $20k too.

May I suggest a tourer V? Smile

S14 or 180SX.

What difference does it make if she is female, 34 and has two kids??!! A nice car is a nice car no matter who you are. Apart from a two-seater being out of the question. The interior in a four door will get f**ked up just as quickly as a two door.

I disagree...

young kids climbing in and out of the back seats....

not a good combination with a two-door.

plus... S14 or 180SX? the kids need to have some leg room.

I don't think she plans on drifting Wink

trust me my mum has done baby sitting for over ten years and loading kids in and out of a car is not fun, a 2 door and kids is a big no no and any parents that only have two door cars curse themselves for buying them, and generally they have less legroom in the back which means as the kids get older the car will not last.

I'm speaking from experience, I have two young kids and I drive a sprinter! Before that I had a Ford XD and there is no difference in the amount of damage the kids have done to either car.

And why would young kids need leg room when they're legs probably dont even reach the floor!!?? Laughing I'd love 180SX as a daily driver but I'd still drift my hachi Wink

New Holden Astra. Friend just bought one, a smidge over your $20k, but a nice car all the same. Lots of room, nicely built and room for kids.

Bah I'm disgusted! I've heard so many car enthusiasts whine about all the soccer mums on the road in their SUV's and Commonwhores and now you've been handed the chance to convert one of those soccer mums into a true believer and what do you do? You tell her to go buy a soccer mum car Rolling Eyes

Try getting in and out of a back seat in either of those cars you suggested on a regular basis, and you will quickly become disinterested with the car. Not to mention when the kids get bigger, there is dick all rear passenger accomodation.

If she appreciates power I'd suggest a Chaser of some description.

No No No You're just not listening are you? *sigh*

I DO get two kids in and out of the back seat of a two door everyday! And I can tell you I love my hachi so much I will never get sick of doing it! By the time the kids get big enough for space to be an issue she'll probably have bought and sold three different cars anyways, unless she plans on driving the same car for the next 10 years Rolling Eyes

get a chaser or tourerv as stated hey indid they can drift and they are different. But hey more than likely she would want an honest car that with regular servcing ain't gonna be expensive to run and maintain, hence a corolla or astra would be more than adequate.
If she needs the car to move the kids aroudn the last thing she wants is a contankarous piece of poo that isn't relaible and costs and arm and a leg to maintain.

to solve an argument from getting ugly just tell us how old the kids are it'll help a lot, at the age of 34 the kids could be up to ten and older so you never know or they could be young.

yeah two kids you want a four door car. id pretty much write off anything two door.. not just casue of the difficulty in getting in and out but in a prang you can be pretty much stuck in the back and stuffed. at leasta 4 door you can either open doors or break windows... big rear hatches that most two doors tend to ave are much tougher then typical side windows.

ive always though a chaser would be nice or a 4 door skyline. preference to the chaser..

the one that i think is a really nice looking car is the IS200 but they will be a hint out of her price range.

You see there you go stereotyping again! How do you know she doesnt want exactly the same sort of car you would want? Do most of the members here buy the cars they have because they are reliable or practical? Do you think that having kids automagically makes you sensible and boring?

P.S. can anyone tell I'm in a stirring mood today Wink I'm not trying to start an argument, just challenging your way of thinking.

get a chaser and a box trailer.

kids can go in the trailer, and stay as far away from the car as possible.

then you've got a car unfouled by little kids.

speaking of kids, i had some kids ask me if my car was "turbo" and i said yes... theyre like WHOAOAAA!!!!!

Chaser i think is the best option.
if i had kids i wouldn't buy anything but a 4 door car imagine if you had an accident (god forbid) 4 a door car has more exits and considering it's your flesh and blood's safety i figure it's the best option.

Or an crown or something like that but i have no idea how much these cost.
as opposed to toyota a 4 door skyline would be just perfect

How long is she plannning on keeping the car?
How much does she drive?
Does she like powerfull cars?
Does she like looks? If so, what kind?
Does she want something that's easy to repair and maintain?
How old are her kids?
What does she drive now?
How much more is she willing to spend on petrol?

Ya need to know all this before you can come up with a list of recomendations.

As a kid who grew up with a mother who only had a 2 door car, i'd say stay the hell away from them! I hated siting in the back, as did my brother and sister.

Asking car enthusiasts what kinda car someone they don't know anything about should buy is stupid. You'll just get generic crap. Give us more details.

I'd be looking around the Camry, Corolla, Astra, Mazda 3, WRX, Pulsar, Civic sorta area though, not the Chaser, Supra, Skyline, Integra, Celica range.

Haha reminds me of some kids that saw me driving through the drive through.

Kids: Is that a real Group A.
Me: Yep.
Kids: Sick, can you do a burnout.
Me: Pointed to 4WD Turbo symbol on the door, laughed and drove off.

yes the sri is a nice car my sisters boyfriend has one only bad thing is no-switchable traction control although you can take the fuse out and its a two door, not that easy to get in and out of and has very limited legroom in the rear trust me i know personally from sitting in it. To drive they feel detached due to an electronic throttle so are slow to respond occasionally and other times a small flex of the ankle and your doing 80, very comfy car great heater/aircon, nice looks not to bad on insurance good fuel economy, but i wouldn't want to be getting kids in and out of the back all day.
I have had a reasonable drive of the car driving it back from the bundanoon south for about an hour and a half, hmmm intoxicated passenger (owner of the vehicles) antics were quite amusing, wanting me to pull along side my parents car and let him moon them, i reframed as he would regret it when sober.
Oh adn its quite stable when you pull the handbrake around a round a bout hmm those intoxicated passengers are bad, oh well its his tyres his flat spotting not.
I found the car to convey very little feddback through the wheel, when on a back country road and hitting corners capable of holding at maybe 30kmph faster according to the owner i was uncertain as to how much grip i had left. It kind of leaves you lingering, while my rona doesn't have mcuh grip it tells me well and truly when i do i'd say even our camry touring has better feedback thru the wheel of the limits left in the car. On that note why not a camry touring nicer sportier suspension nice looking kit plenty of legroom and huge boot.

the astras are crap.

liberty is a good option, if she wants something fast and practical what about a forrestor?

did i miss something? is this a drift mum? why is everyone crapping on about how good the cars can drift? i must be missing it.

having said that VT commos are horrible horrible cars.

first series forrestors will only be in your price range but they dont have alot of legroom at the back (perfect for kids)

i reckon go the 2 door, the kids will get so sick of climbing in and out of the car they wont be whiging every 2 seconds to take them down to the shops, they'll get off their lazy asses and ride a bike or walk or somethign!! hahaahh

Assuming she isnt buying new (have to be nuts to buy new), I'd say get:

In the roomy family car category:

Subaru Liberty
Toyota Camry
Mazda6
Mazda 626 V6
Honda Accord
Mitsi Magna (if you are desperate)

In the small family car category (generally gutless with 4-5 ppl in car + luggage):

Toyota Corolla
Subaru Impreza
Mazda3
Mazda 323 SP20
Honda Civic
Hyundai accent etc

In the 4 door performance category:
1JZ Cressida Wink
Toyota Chaser
Subaru Liberty GT
WRX

Forget anything aussie made like Commies and Falcons. Same goes for European stuff.

2.5L Liberty RX manual mmm nice car 2000-2002 cars are around the 20-25K mark but generally have a few km's on them. I wouldn't mind one but need just a little more power for the weight.

When I was a kid, my mum had and Austin Healy Sprite (Bought it b 4 it was worth a small fortune). It has only 2 seats, and she had 2 kids. One of us would sit in the passenger, and the other would climb behind the seat (like in a 2+2)and sit in the boot space / between the seats over the transmission tunnel looking foreward.
My mum loved it and loved to drive it, and as kids we loved to ride in it, being a low to the road traditional sports car.

So i dont think having a 2 door should scare her off, i would imagine riding in Indi's sprinter would be luxury by comparison.

Forresters are a good choice aswell. You could get a nice 2001 model, maybe a GT at a strech.
For a big family sedan with some power how about an EF-AU XR6

VW? Bah European cars don't have anywhere near the quality of the Jap cars, you are just paying for the badge and exclusivity these days. A bit of sound deadening makes any car door sound expensive lol

Cant believe only one person has suggested the most suitable car in this a Toyota forum. JZX90 Tourer V or if she spends a bit extra JZX100 Tourer V. No 4 door car can compete in the price range Very Happy
If your in W.A. tell her to buy this:
