quick q. - w58 into ae86, which crossmember? Wed, 18 May 2005 06:23 Go to next message
Just a quick question guys and girls,

I did a search but couldn't find an answer.

So what gearbox crossmember to use? I've been told ra65, can anyone confirm? The few wreckers I've called have auto ra65 crossmembers, will these be appropriate?

Thanks heaps,

Dan

Will try to get the camera and take pics of my W55 mount for the 18RG/W55 setup in my KE70. Basically the rubber mount is behind the original one by around 2-3 inches.

Thought I'd dig this up to see if anyone knows any more.

Is there a factory gearbox crossmember which comes close? Or will I be pulling out the welder?

Thanks

I have a W58 in my KE corolla. It uses a custom made crossmember. The issue is mating the w series gearbox mount to the T series x-member. In the case of my car if the two had been mated the gear box would have been forced to sit impossibly high at the back end or the x-member would have to have been lowered, neither were feasible solutions.

This would be a fairly common problem across the above mentioned cars I would suspect (could be wrong?) as a T50 bolted directly up to my car with no mods and used a standard x-member, the w58 didn't even come close with any combo other than on a custom x-member.

For a definitive answer TE72_Turbo could answer in respect to AE chassis cars as he is running a Wxx box in an AE71. Someone could PM him if they want to know.

hey,

do you have any pictures of how the x member looks??

does it just make the w5# sit lower at the rear than it would with the standard x-member??

thanks

While searching a found a reference on an Australian site that an "import Corolla auto crossmember" was used. Can't remember where, but google found it.

No further information at all though. I will be butchering a T50 crossmember and making it fit.

This was made by a mate when he owned my ute, with a different engine you may want to sit the engine/gearbox back a little. The 18RG needed a bit more firewall clearance.

Another little note to remember is what engine mounts, and what bellhousing you use - if you're using Toyota engine mounts (with engine on slight lean) and Mr. Dellow's famous mickey-mouse ears housing, you may find the gearbox wants to be on a bit of an angle. I know I did...
