Help me identify this car!!

Hey guys,
I was driving to work this morning and noticed up ahead of me that this ute that was driving along was for sale. Didn't really pay too close attention to it until i got closer and saw that it had been resprayed, dumped, big rims, exhaust etc. Looked quite nice. On his back windscreen it had the for sale details, and i think one line of it said "88 Stumpy". NFI what that meant, so i assumed it was the year and model or something. Now, i'd never seen this model ute before, and it definitely didnt look like any holden or ford that i'd ever seen, so i kinda assumed it was a Toyota. No idea what though..
It was bigger than a mightyboy (doesn't help much i know)
smaller than a hilux
2 door
reasonably short tray (in comparison to say a hilux)
Wasn't one of those bare metal tray things, it had panels around it if you know what i mean..
It looked really really tough and i'm dying to know what it really was. If anyone has any clues or any ideas or anything PLEASE let me know! I've been googling all afternoon and found nothing!
Cheers,
Mark.

by your description i also would have gone for the Brumby.
I have seen one of these with an STI drive train in it, very quick little ute.
But not as quick as a Datto ute with a 4AGTE and 200 KW at the treads

just a thougth that maybe goin off it being called stumpy it is a rodeo or lux but with a dual cab tray some truckers do that to make it look smaller that or if it looked a lot smaller than a lux it couldve been datsun 1000 ute (i think its a 1000)

Thanks for all the help guys, but infortunately it wasn't any of those cars. I guess it looked most similar to the Rodeo, but the bonnet was shorter, the tray way deeper, and it didnt have that little half-cab thing behind the cabin..

the front headlights look so much like subaru, in the courier mail car liftout it mentioned a new car that subaru was importing from europe to rebadge for the australian market....but the filename on the pic says toyota so i guess not

aaahh, that woudl explain "toyota" appearing in the filename, never expected to see a scion pop up anywhere though, never even seen them in publicity etc.

It looked very similar to the middle one there, but like i said earlier, it didn't have that little half-cabin thing behind where you sit.
Is the middle one an 80's Rodeo?

so it was just a single cab not a king cab ?
and it wasn't flat tray.
did it have a canopy on it to make it look a bit like a station wagon or a van ?
Or did it just have like a tarp across it ?
It could maybe be a toyota stout if it's called stumpy ?

there was a stocka nissan pulsar (yes, a pulsar factory ute) getting around Narellan for a while. Looked a bit like a proton in size, but with a n14 type front. Just googled for a photo but cannot find reference to it anywhere!
