I'm after opinions on whether a 225/50/16 tyre is to wide for a 6" wide wheel?

225 is good for a 7" wheel.

no it is not too wide. it will fit quite reasonably. 6in is the smallest you would want to use for a 225/50
probably not the best choice tho.

well, depends on what you mean by too wide.
if you mean too wide as in "will it fit" then the answer is it will fit.
if you mean too wide as in "is it outside it's optimum" then the answer is yes.

I have 205/50/15's on a 6" rim and the tire sits out from the rim just. That will give you an idea.

rim width x 25.4 x 1.1 = minimum tire width
rim width x 25.4 x 1.3 = maximum tire width
example
7 inch rim x 25.4 x 1.1 = 195.58
7 inch rim x 25.4 x 1.3 = 231.14
low profile below 50 stick to lower bound
50 series and up closer to maximum
