Engine choices

I might be getting my filthy hands on a Bedford van soon and it will be in dire need of an engine transplant as we all know that the Holden 202 rubbish aint gonna cut it.
The easiest and best engine I guess would be a 302 or a 351 EFI but I'm worried about the fuel consumption Anyone know the economy of these things?
Other than that whats some other engines that maybe able to handle the abuse of my right foot and wont stress about towing my fat arse heavy boat for 3000+ km trips?
Any thoughts?

what's your price range?
the holden supercharged 6 is a useful engine (and can handle a pulley upgrade easily), but once again you'd probably be concerned by fuel economy

i'd suggest turbo diesel for a serious towing car
not that i'm dissing the impressive towing that your falcoon did, but nothing beats the mega torque - from nearly idle - that an oil burner with a blower will provide.

I once saw one of these vans with a fuel injected 400 chev motor run a flat 12 sec pass at the drags . Aerodynamics like a brick will not help your fuel ecomony, neither will forced induction. I'd go with whatever injected v8 is the easiest to fit - geared proerly it should lope along pretty lazily on long runs.

if u do go for a new ford or holden efi v8 remember the later models have security in them
and depending what engine u choose price ranges from 300 to maybe 800
if u had 10000 u can get brand new 4.6 quad cam ford engines out of late model mustangs from the usa
i just did one in an eleanor mustang
theyre not to bad engine

I've never used the factory ECUs as they are to expensive and I just cant be bothered stuffing around with all the added crap that goes with them. Drive by wire, etc etc

ok cool
i have only done up to the 2000 model fordmustang engine
the workshop i know get these engines brand new
they are left over ones from when ford make them
i buy a unit from usa and u can do some adjustments to the ecu
for better perfomance and i also use it for removin security

Gee, okay. Yet in the same thread you consider a 302?

I'm not aware of the 1UZ having more torque than a 302

I don't recall it being lacking in balls, especially when it has an aftermarket ECU on it like you plan.

Theres also the matter of mating up a transmission that isn't going to give up half way on a trip.

Toyota trans with regular changes and a simple trans cooler would be fine.

I can and already have proved that wrong.
The trans has to be able to move the vehicle its fitted to, as well as being able to tow 1000+kgs for 1200kms non stop in 40 degree heat.

Toyota LandCruiser fitted with the brother of the 1U with auto trans and a trans cooler bigger than this monitor towing my boat a few weeks ago! It started spewing fluid out underneath causing lots of white smoke to bellow out the back.
