You may not have to, but any grit you add to the surface to help the primer adhere would be a good thing.

Sand it, clean it, then prime it. Always follow the directions on the primer can as well, some require that you use it within a certain time frame (ie. after 30 minutes, before 1 hour).

Clean it with wax'n'grease remover, won't damage the plastic and will make it clean enough for the primer to stick.

i've noticed some plastics go 'furry' if you sand them.
whenever i was painting plastics during stereo installs i just used prepsol (wax and grease remover) and plastic primer. didnt sand it.

Using an electric sander? Some will do that VERY easily due to the heat generated from the friction. A variable speed sander can fix that, sometimes. Other times the plastic just won't sand well unless it's by hand. Realistically though, you only have to sand the plastic if it's painted and even then it's not essential.

As you said, a bit of wax'n'grease remover and you'll be right for internal parts. Smile

All you need to do is take the gloss off the plastic, don't worry about sanding it properly.

me n my brother painted the lower lip on my old ra60, I dont think we sanded it but i know we cleaned it be4 the primer. In the end it started to flake, started as little chips from rocks.

Im thinking of spraying the black part on the bumper on my ae92. those of u with ae92, u know how the bumper is already rough..... u reckon you'd have to sand that? Cause it has like a texture alredy, if you sand it, it'd go smooth.
