7age pinging Mon, 23 May 2005 10:16 Go to next message
MY SET-UP:

7a block with stock rods and cranks

4age smallport high compression pistons

4age smallport injectors (shorted at bypassed the resistor)

4age bigport head with t-vis enabled (MAP TYPE)

4age bigport jdm ecu

ignition timing is 10 degrees grounded

PROBLEM:

engine seems to ping at 2,000 to 2,500rpm on first gear but will eventually disappear at 3,000rpm and up...

is this normal? or there's something wrong?

just finished replacing the fuel filter, cleaned the TB and air filter, bought new factory spark plugs... but the problem still persisted...

thanks in advance... cheers! Very Happy

Thats quite a set up!
hows it go other than the pinging?
I am havng a shot in the dark, but have you had the compression check?
the bigport head is from a 1.6, th 7AFE is 1.8, from what i know, id guess it would be pretty high compression?
especially with hi-comp pistons.
i know that in the older motors, ie k motors, a common mod is to put a 3k 1200 head on a 4k 1300 to give it more compression, and it isnt uncommon for these engines to ping in the lower revs under heavy throttle.

Hang on, your using the 4AGE MAP ECU (1.6L) on a 7AGE (1.8L)

I'd be thinking its pinging cause its not getting enough fuel.

i'm using the 4age smallport 230cc i think injectors over the 4age bigport injectors which are 180cc i think and i shorted and bypassed the resistor.

do a compression test.
if you are getting a higher cranking pressure than you would expect for those cams, then that could be your problem (ie dynamic compression is too high). what static CR did you design for? what overlap are the cams?

next put a multimeter on the oxygen sensors output and have a look.. is it going lean? (ie leaner than stoich) (or take it to someone with a wideband/dyno... if i were you i'd dyno it anyway just to make sure the mixtures are ok)

you need to eliminate the issues step by step...

had it on a dyno and had the air/fuel mixtures checked?

some of the guys in the states with their 4agze's have encountered a low rpm lean out. and they use 'the grunt box'... Razz

sad to say but a dyno shop isn't available here in our area, i searched the net and someone said that i would yield over 11:0:1 compression by using the smallport pistons.

but is it really natural for high compression engines to ping at certain revs?
